I wasn't dismissing Hughes, but I was banking on Gracie's talents plus his experience. However, I didn't see the fight, and so I'm waiting for a rerun or a DVD, and that may take time.
From what I heard, Gracie was simply overpowered. Sure, he faced many "stronger" fighters in the past, but none had Hughes's ground game. Plus, I have a suspicion that Gracie simply doesn't train like he used to, and Matt trains as hard as anybody. I may have just coem down to that.
Honestly, though I picked Gracie, I'm glad Hughes won. Heroes were meant to be toppled, and records were meant to be broken (though, in baseball, not by Bonds...but that's a different story).
I love watching Hughes fight, and I saw Spike TV do a career retrospective of his best fights, and he is amazing.
Of course, this means I can't wait to see who comes around in the future to topple Hughes...

Comments from the hubby who saw the fight:

"Hughes is a great athelete."

"Gracie didn't have the head-start he had in the early days with a martial art that people didn't know how to counter."

Hughes actually got Gracie in an arm bar. Of course, Gracie wasn't going to tap out and did manage to slip it, but Hughes said he heard things popping in Gracie's arm.
