Emerging from my pie coma. Man, good eats through the holidays. Goooood eats.
Week 8: Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
Normally no. I save OCs for original fiction.
I’m not fond of OCs in fanfiction. There are a couple of writers I trust to handle them so that they don’t overpower the fic or fandom in question. Also, I’m pretty discerning what I read these days and don’t pick up just any fic without having vetted it in some manner, so I can usually steer clear of badly written OCs.
That said, as a result of the heavy vetting, I tend not to run across any that read like Mary Sues. I think that a Mary Sue OC is a young fanfic writer (not age but in new to writing/writing fanfiction) and it evens out in due course. The way the fandom winds have shifted, I’m not really sure they’re all that big of a problem anymore, certainly not like they used to be.
Or I’m just lucky that I’m not running across and reading them.
