outside of Asheville, NC

We pulled into Asheville around 9:30 last night. We got a welcome reception from my roommate Murdoch's old pal JD and his gaggle of friends. Beers were a buck and smokes were the blessedly cheap price of $3.99 instead of $9.50 like they were in New York. Add to that the fact that there were leather couches in front of the stage and that we could smoke inside. I never wanted to leave!

At this point I had to start borrowing money, as I had no access to my bank account. D'oh.

Evan went on after midnight after braving more technical difficulties and power mishaps. He had to run his drum loops straight through the PA, which is only as reliable as the club's equipment. The low end has a tendency to drop out on a shitty PA, which happened a few times.

After some more drinking, we went on and the place went crazy. There weren't a whole lot of people there, but those that watched us were really enthusiastic and moved around a lot. Of course nobody bought our shit, which was a disappointment after our enormous success in Brooklyn. I ended up giving out a couple of demos to drunk girls that liked us, but that was it.

At one point during the second band a pretty cute girl that offered Jack sex for a CD (yowch) came and sat on my lap on the couch where I was attempting to hawk merch. I guess I was the next-best thing. When she put her arm around me, I realized she was extremely drunk. She was headbanging, but not to the rhythm of the music. At one point, she slipped her hand onto the nape of my neck and started to massage my scalp. If I were anywhere near as drunk and slutty as she'd been, I could have gone for it with massive success--but I don't think I'd have respected myself afterward. She kept crookedly trying to make sideways eye contact with me, but I wouldn't take the bait.

As it was, I got really uncomfortable and awkward and left for the bathroom. I didn't see her after that.

I thought the band we played with was pretty well-matched to our style. They were also a 3-piece band that did kind of slow, deliberate (if not a little predictable) stoner rock. Jack insisted that they sucked ass, but I enjoyed myself plenty.

At the end of the show we went to JD's place, one of the filthiest houses I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. They were prepared for our arrival with copious amounts of PBR and frozen pizzas. Mighty hospitable folks in North Carolina. After I made the mistake of smoking pot for once, I was totalled. I crashed out on a couch that smelled reminiscent of a bag of wet dog assholes. I'm still kinda carrying the indelible funk around on my blankets, as was everyone that slept there. And to add insult to injury I found a used condom next to the couch where I slept that I hadn't noticed the night before because it wasn't in my line of vision. How rapey is that? Ugh.

After we got moving today I went to a grocery store to pick up the money that my dad wired me (like the spoiled brat that I am). I felt bad hitting him up, but he was really sweet about it and even told me he was proud of me. I'm lucky to have sucha cool dad.

As soon as I got the money I got a $30 carton of Camels, paid back my debts and bought some food. And coffee. I got a cup of sweet, glorious coffee.

Well, it looks like we have just over a week left of tour and things are going pretty smoothly aside from sardine-packing 6 of us in the van. There has to be one person coffin-style in upper futon loft, but we manage. It's surprisingly comfortable up there.

We're currently driving through some badass mountains and there's not a whole lot more to report. Let's see how Chattanooga treats us.
