Brainstorning: BF October

Alright, I'm pretty certain I know WHO I'm gonna be writing about this month: Boots and Hearts.  I've been wanting to get back to those two for a while now and something about them (probably Hearts) is screaming October is it.  It'll be another serial piece, I think, just to gear up for NaNo.  (Plus, I'm hoping to get another story under my belt ( Read more... )

Boots and Hearts are soo endearing. I remember when they were born from a different brain storming session. *sigh* It's so nice seeing you raise them up properly.

As for me...

Storming over Baptism by Fire

I was struck yesterday with the idea of witch burnings, but more contemporary in nature with those crazy right wingers we love so much acting like the pyre is their pulpit about how flames cleanse the wicked ...from the earth, yadda yadda but then as the fires start they kind of get minds of their own and instead of burning "the witch" they jump to those condemning and preaching. Perhaps enchanted, maybe carried on the wind. The world my never know.
What? Why are you looking at me with eyes that accuse me of writing about my issues with the right wing nutters? Who me? I would NEVER!
Too cliche?

I had an idea for this yesterday and it came back to me this morning.
I was thinking about a family of werewolves, on the night of the full moon they have a huge bbq lunch before the moon rises so that they wo...n't hunt. One of the girls has hit the time of her first change but she doesn't want to eat because she's a vegetarian. I thought that bit of struggle would be different, if not just fun/silly.

Next for All That Jazz

I'm thinking my favorite wish granting demon, Shed wants to come out to play. A nice, smoky crossroads jazz dive. Bodies grinding, Robert Johnson making his guitar sing, southern heat and humidity, the buzz of night outside. The not so hot girl watching everyone get their dance but her, longing to be one of the pretty ones, the ones everyone asks and wants but she thinks she'd be smart enough to play them. Shed, of course being benevolent, gives this to her in trade for her soul but it is so much more than she can handle. Even he doesn't see how badly this can go. I wonder if he'll feel a twinge of regret or if this will be just another day at the office for him? I think this will be far more about him than it will ever be about her. I think. We know how these things go.

That's all I have for that one.

Thoughts?

I'd eventually like to compile a collection of stories about them for publication. Right now, Hearts is being very insistent that I write about them, but she's not giving me anything very clear to write about.

The plan so far is to write about how they first met. Essentially, Boots is new in town and he's being picked on by bullies because he's got a metal arm. Just as he's being shoved into a dumpster, a masked figure appears from out of nowhere and scares the bullies off. Before he can say thank you, the masked person disappears in a stream of blonde pigtails.

From there, Boots tries to figure out who the masked person is, which doesn't take him long. In fact, he figures it out the next day at school when he notices a girl with long blonde pigtails and really big boots. He's about to go up and say something when the bullies from yesterday corner him and demand he tells them who his mystery friend is so they can teach the person a lesson. Boots lies and says he doesn't know, and the bullies start picking on him again.

Finally, he gets sick of it and shouts, "I TOLD YOU I DON'T KNOW!!!" and punches one of the bullies with his metal hand. The bully goes down and then the teacher walks in. Boots gets sent to detention, which is conflicting for him because while he's proud of himself for standing his ground he's also terrified of what his mother's going to say.

And while he's thinking about all of this, the detention room door opens ... and the girl with pigtails is being escorted in. She takes a seat next to him and that is where I cut it off for the week.

My concern with this is that the "baptism by fire" prompt is maybe TOO vague. I want to make sure it's stressed that Boots is NOT the sort of boy who would normally go shouting at people and punching them. I feel like maybe that instance of him standing up for himself and not relying on someone else to do it kinda fits the prompt ... but maybe not???

Now, your thoughts:

I like the idea of playing with witches pyres and the uncertainty of magic. I could definitely see this being very Inquisitional with a dash of Animal Farm in the compliancy of the masses.

About the jazz one... again, I like it very much, but the way I understood the prompts to work in order to use "jazz" you have to use "fire" as well. But this isn't a major issue. You COULD tweak this idea to cover both prompts if you want, very easily. Like, maybe the "fire" part can be twisted so that her "baptism by fire" comes in the form of her introduction to sins of the flesh/lust. Baptism symbolizes the beginning, whether of faith or a new life or whatever. It could be an interesting way of using the prompt.

I'm using the proper one and then Jazz as JFF since Shed wants it that way. :-)

But that's only if Avalon will let me play with other characters. She's been very demanding of my attention lately.
