More Thinky Thoughts

You guys are probably SO sick of seeing me post about the novel project by now. Sorry, but I need a good idea bouncing space, and since you all are so wonderfully creative....

Anyway, here's the thought about Clara. Again.

Originally I'd wanted her murdered to create intrigue and angst. But now I'm wondering if maybe that'll create too many complications.

A major cause of death back in the 1920s was during childbirth (thanks, pele, for pointing me in this direction). As more and more professionally trained doctors became available, people started turning to them instead of midwives. The thing about this is that the increase in doctors actually led to an increase in MORTALITY rates as well. More people were dying under doctor care than from local apothecaries and midwives.

Now I'm wondering if, to keep things cleaner, Clara should die in childbirth. There'd still be the angst of never seeing her baby and husband, but it'd cut out the crime angle completely. I could probably instill SOME humor into it, such as something along these lines:

Alan (husband) is crying and knows she's going to die.

Alan: I can't do this alone, Clara.

Clara: Don't be silly. You can, I know it.

Alan: *shakes head*

Clara: If you don't, you'll be seeing an awful lot of my mother.

Alan: *laughs sadly* Oh, God. That's horrible to say!

Clara: Mmm... yes, but now you've got some motivation.

Anyway, it's just an idea. Thoughts, flist? Eldr, I'm pretty sure I know what your vote will be. *grins*
