I searched the internets today for information about swing dancing in Adelaide and finally found something that looked reasonably up to date -- "The Swing Sesh" -- and they had a "Level 2" class on tonight (Thursday 26th) and also mentioned some social dancing at the Casino from 9pm.
I went to the class and was surprised with week 2 of a beginners blues course (rather than the usual Lindy Hop). I floundered through parts of the lesson but eventually caught on. It turns out that the level 2 course is not a 'drop in' course, but is 6 weeks and they intersperse it with other stuff (in this case blues). Furthermore, the intermediate level classes (after you have a solid swingout) that I was chasing are "Level 3" on tuesday, and that they don't teach a swingout until Level 2. Oh well. Next time I will know where it is at (and possibly plan ahead and talk to people).
I went down to the casino to the live band "Lucky Sevens". They played really fast, bouncy jazz and other stuff more suited to rock and roll dancers or swing dancers wanting to die or do balboa. However, I did get a set of awesome dances with a few girls during the band break, when there was some real swing music. The "Lucky Sevens" were a great entertaining band, with some cool songs, but not really appropriate for Lindy Hop. Having said that, I would recommend most Lindy hoppers go down there at least once, to dance in the rare "slow" fast song and watch the crazies.... and there was always the band break!
And then I caught a taxi home, and woke flick/andrew up to let me in.
