I am starting to pack up my things for when I move out next year. It's a scary process but it might be easier to do now then later. I am a serious pack rat. I had no idea I was this bad.

Any tips on packing? Letting go of things?

Well, this is how it worked out for me so far:

Pack everything you know you will need, then assess how much more you can carry. Then pack what you think you'll need, in order of importance (be it for sentimental or practical reasons), and absolutely stop when you hit your limit.

Lastly, make as much money as you can from what you left out, via secondhand shops and the like, and give away the rest. Or throw them out. :P

I'm not all that good at the letting go thing, though, mostly because I don't usually let myself accumulate stuff I don't at least attach a great deal of importance to. But I learned that clothes that don't fit you anymore should always be given away, because it's really no use keeping them for when you lose/gain weight and fit them perfectly. Never happens. *g* Also, consider selling or donating books that you've accumulated and never read but intend to one day, because if they're mass paperbacks available in libraries (if you have access to them) or secondhand/excess stock bookstores, you can always pick them up again for cheap later if you really want to.

Such good ideas. I have mostly been putting a lot of stuff into piles to give to the local second hand shops and so true about the books. I am so bad with that.
