[Relief washed over her when she woke up in the cafeteria and not in the cell. It had been torture watching people be taken and returned modified. It was even scarier to wait and know that you could be next. She had tried to remain calm and collected throughout the week, but it was difficult to retain her composure. She was furious at their captors and worried about the others but she was too drained to do anything about it ( ... )

[Sora has only been here for a few days; although she's heard from various people about their missing friends, it isn't a personal thing. But they were described to her, and she has a thing for faces.

When she comes down for breakfast, she knows who it is she's found. Mostly. Those who still have a human face. What she can't work out is what's been done to them. Utopia's experiments were nasty and brutish things, and as a street-level hero, she could never afford to be squeamish, but it still takes her a moment of swallowing to stifle her reaction. Even the smell of exposed, red flesh is too much.]

W-what... [bolts over to the nearest person who looks able to talk, a girl with grey skin and coloured horns, slumped on a chair] What happened? I'll help you!

[Kanaya watches the girl come in and the expression of complete shock that takes over her face. She couldn't place her and wondered if she was new here, it was a good possibility. Then again nothing this bad had ever happened before, anyone would be just as stunned.]

[She only watches as the girl comes closer to her, a wise choice since she is the least deformed out of the bunch. It takes her a moment to answer her questions and while she speaks the phantom flails around in her abdomen, pushing every which where before attempting to climb out of her mouth again] We were experimented on, if you would like to call it that. In essence it was torture. [she looks around the room] It will be difficult to bounce back from this.

That's awful! [now that she's concerned, her expression is pure horror, caring and sads in equal proportions. When the thing tries to crawl out of the girl's throat, she automatically rests a hand on her shoulder in an attempt to provide comfort.] Can I help? I could find someone, or get you something...?

[wait.] Who did this?

[Kanaya could immediately tell that this girl was very compassionate and lets her keep her hand there, even if the phantom was squirming inside of her still. If Sora remains in contact with her for too long she'd feel herself getting weaker as her energy is drained away]

It was horrible. And no, I do not need anything but I appreciate the offer. [she hasn't eaten in a while but why would she want to? what if eating makes the phantom stronger?] All I can tell you is that they have red collars.

Red collars... [that doesn't mean anything to her; she's too new. She can feel the drain after a few more seconds, but that isn't as important as helping someone. The hand tightens for a moment, and then Kanaya is pulled forward into a hug. The drain increases and she can feel her legs start to shake, just a little, but again. Far less important.]

[She is stunned by how emotional this girl was getting. They didn't know each other but it seemed like she was taking this all very hard. She was amazingly empathetic and Kanaya didn't know how to react to that, instead she let the girl hug her.]

I take solace in knowing that it is temporarily over, but who will know when it will occur again. [she pauses to fight back the phantom] Touching me is causing you harm.

[The cafeteria was one of the few places in the tower that Eridan actually went. Which meant he was here now, eating oatmeal mixed with bacon and occasionally glancing over at the others in the room that had been there when he came in.

Eventually, he carried over his bowl to the table nearest Kanaya's chair, and sat down beside her. He leaned in slightly to speak in hushed tones.]

Hey, Kan, I knoww wwe aren't on the best a' terms...but wwhat's wwith all these freaks?

[She gives him a stern expression. They did not choose to be this way and she was one of them, if it was noticeable at first glance or not. The angrier she got the more the phantom struggled to get out of her, her deformity should be clear now]

We were taken a week ago by those in red collars and kept in cells. First they would deprive us of food and water for a day, the following day we would be taken and surgically changed.

[as she speaks the phantom tries to crawl out of her mouth, but after a few moments of this Kanaya covers her mouth with her hand until it is no longer trying to escape]

Oh god. This was just... oh god.

The situation was bad, very bad, terribly bad, but Ienzo didn't seem to register that until he heard the curses. A large number of profanities, in several languages, started running through his brain in quick succession -- they were the only things that could reasonably describe his thoughts right now, or lack thereof. This was admittedly not the first time he had utilized Braig's 'foreign language lessons', but the first time where he had used so much of it. And definitely the first where he was considering saying them out loud ( ... )

She heard his footsteps but it took a few moments for her to decide to look up from her lap and see who it was. Ienzo. Just the other day they were sharing notes, it's amazing how things can change so quickly. Kanaya doesn't say anything, just stares at him for a few moments while the phantom ripples through her body. After a few moments, she looks away.

He could see it; sense it almost. There was definitely something wrong with Kanaya, something latched on to her. Maybe to someone else the truth would have come more immediately to mind: an angry, vengeful spirit. But unfortunately, Ienzo didn't believe in ghosts. He had yet to see any concrete evidence, thanks much. So the Darkness analogy still popped up.

His expression had changed from wide-eyed surprise to a somewhat detached state of concern, like he was still trying to keep a straight face in this circumstance. It felt as utterly alien as it looked. This expression remained as he walked through the past week and a half, wherein people had been disappearing from the Tower for unknown reasons. He looked around; all of the missing people were here, in some shape or form. He suddenly felt an overwhelming urge to hiss.

Instead, he said quietly, "...They tortured you, didn't they." It wasn't quite a question.

Again she looks up at him, almost startled that he asked that so straightforwardly. She nods slowly, "Yes, they experimented on us, deforming many," she looks around at the others. By all means she had gotten off easily compared to many of the others. She still had all her senses, limbs, no extra ones, and could get along okay even if she was drained of energy.

"It was horrible." With that, the phantom tries to climb out again but she closes her mouth and its attempt is over, even if it flails all throughout her body in anger.

Unfortunately, tact is not one of Ienzo's strong suits. Especially when he's got many, many more pressing things on his mind. Kanaya's voice was dull and toneless, as if she could barely muster up the power to speak; and abruptly, she clamped her mouth shut, as if trying to hold down vomit. It was at that point he realized something was in there -- what, he didn't know, but it was in there and it was waging absolute war on Kanaya. Experimentation... this didn't seem to be experimentation of the kind he was used to (at least, not at this point in his life).

"...Is something in there...?" They injected her with something. But what?

She nods, "They cut me open, removed all my organs, and placed a phantom inside of me. If you recall during the blackout there were phantoms roaming the tower. That is what is inside of me. It is restless and wants to come out. After putting the phantom in they returned my organs to the proper place and closed me up." All of this was said in an emotionless voice. While Kanaya often wasn't very emotive, now was a thousand times worse. Throughout her explanation, the phantom under her skin was trying to escape with no avail.

All pretenses dropped when she brought up the phantom.

He hadn't thought of it before, mostly because he never wanted to think about it ever again. One of those things had killed him in the storm, and right now, the whole incident was flashing back in living color... and that thing was living under her skin?!

Long story short: "OH SHIT" levels went through the roof, and all he could spit out was: "...I'm sorry..."
