Today Rob Kugler and crew came a little after 8am and cut down 9 trees by the back of the barn, the second step in readying for a new garage to be built. The first step was taking down the chicken pen which Bill and I did Sunday. They would have had to come down eventually and it made sense to have them taken now before construction. where they were dropped is exactly where the garage will be built. With my neighbor so unfriendly I knew going thru his open field would be unthinkable, so this was logical. They did a great job with cleanup and dropped the trees precisely where they wanted, even the largest, which was leaning over the barn, using a comealong attached to the dump truck to direct its fall.
His fee was very reasonable and they were all professional and courteous. I now have a large pile of nice pine chips where the chicken pen was/will be.
Speaking of the neighbor, I offered him some of the pine logs for his outdoor woodburner, but he declined. He did, however, graciously offer to allow me to top the last tree in the row, closest to the property line. Since I dont want to argue with him, I didnt contest his claim to the dead pine and instructed Rob to comply w Mike's wishes. He must have a powerful need to feel in control. He must not feel he has much control in his life. sad, really.
I asked Rob to look at the largest maple which is only about 8 or 10' away from the house and we discussed trimming some of the limbs overhanging the house. BUT...when he climbed it, he noted many badly rotted crotches which were funneling water into the trunk, weakening it. SO...he is coming back in a day or 2 to take it down completely. It is at least 2 feet in diameter at the base.
Next step is having the excavation done. Rob told me of a couple guys who do that on the side and are reasonably priced, so I will be checking into that next.
I am still looking for track and hardware for the sliding doors, just like whats on the barn in first photo. I did "track!" some down , but will have Andy go look at it to see if it is usable and reasonably priced. A guy has some on his scrap pile, but I dont care for him, so will let someone else deal.
I enjoy the process of doing a big project like this and the decision making, and trying to find usable, preowned goods and reasonably priced services.
The excavator will push the stumps out and the smaller rocks in the pile will be used to fill in the holes. The huge rocks in the pile (in foreground of before photo) will be relocated to various flower beds and interesting locations elsewhere on the property. There is a pile of old concrete chunks out by the driveway. I hope they can use that as well. I would like that to be gone.
