So, I think it's time for a bit of a Rosh Hashanah/catch up on the past month post.
So, I've been living on my own for about a month now. I was living w/ my family for a week and a half before I found this place. The apartment is a 15 min. walk downhill (closer to 20 when going uphill) from the Yeshiva. I'm sharing it w/ a slightly older American olah chadashah (new immigrant) who is not a student, but works at nights, 3 cats, and a dog who may or may not turn out to be a permanent resident. We've been getting along pretty well so far. The apartment isn't big, but it's big enough, comfortable, and well-decorated by the flatmate (which I've taken to calling her b/c it's more accurate than roommate and shorter than apartmentmate).
Classes have been going on for a few weeks now, and I'm loving them. I'm taking Talmud 4 mornings a week. I'm in Level III of IV, and it seems that most of the ppl in the class are on more or less the same level, and the teacher's awesome. We've been studying masechet sukkah, perek shlishi, about the lulav. I've been chevruta-ing w/ Michelle, whom some of u may know from Brandeis. Other than that, I'm taking Tanach and Ulpan Gimmel 2ce a week each (Ulpan for only 75 min. each time), and midrash and 2 different halachah classes 1ce a week each. Both halachah classes are w/ the Rosh Yeshiva, whom I like as a teacher in those classes.
It's a long day, tho, since I've been getting there at 7 for the 15 min. Halachah Yomit shiur before shacharit every morning. So my day runs from 7-6:15 S-W, 7-3ish on Thurs. It's long. And I haven't been getting to bed on time for 7 hrs. of sleep much.
But I am making friends. Having ppl to hang out w/ (and having a routine) I think are what really make a place feel like home to me, and I'm def. starting to feel settled in here. I'm still learning my way around the city, but each week there are a few more streets that I know where they are and how to get to them.
Anyway, in more Rosh Hashanah type thoughts...
Selichot the first night I really connected w/, but not as much since then. I've done selichot almost every morning since last week, which is a cool thing to be able to say, but I'm a little sad that it didn't have more impact. Rosh Hashanah really snuck up on me, in a big big way... I'm davening at Moreshet Avraham, a Masorti shul, w/ my family, and I'm a little nervous that w/o any English at all in the machzor, I might get a little bored or lost. I'm glad to be spending the time w/ family, tho.
Ok, time to finish up things here (folding clothes, packing, showering, etc.) so I can be there on time.
Shanah tovah u'metukah to all.
