He goes back, once, alone. He is not cleared, and it is not safe, so he stands on the beach facing the sea (in which the prison is only a small dot again the horizon, a faint speck of horror) and shudders with as much passion as a dog can muster.

It’s a pity, because Padfoot had loved the sea, before. Padfoot had loved many things, before-friendship, Remus, James, Lily. Peter. They’ve stolen it Padfoot thinks: he thinks in white and grey and Black, like dogs do. They’ve stolen it and it was Mine and it is wrong to lose so much for so little, and oh, oh, I’ll never escape.

So Padfoot turns and runs; and when Remus opens the door he crashes abruptly into being Sirius again and averts the reprimands for leaving by shoving his face forward. I won’t have them take you too he keens, between kisses, fierce and furious. He can taste the seawater on his tongue and knows it falls from his own eyes, that the prison has infested his soul, poisoning his sweat and tears and blood.
