Murilo got back to the hotel room and wasted precious minutes filling the bath with water before he got into it. He needed ice and lots of it but he’d have to wait for that until his boss arrived. He hoped it wasn’t going to be too long because he really needed to bring his temperature down fast to start to calm the need inside of him that was getting louder the more time passed.
He was thankful that the hotel at least has a bath because he didn’t want to think about the consequences if it didn’t. It was an added bonus that it was in his room but if it had been another member of the team that wouldn’t have mattered. He was too weak to care about the questions he might have had to answer as a result.
The hotel was so loud it took longer than it normally would to identify the sounds of the team trudging down the corridor at a much slower pace than him. There was a commotion outside the bathroom and then the door opened. Second later ice was being tipped into the bath and the temperature of the water dropped dramatically.
Tyler handed Jonathan another bucket of ice and he started to feel marginally better. He watched Tyler head out of the room again whilst his boss perched on the edge of the bath. He took a moment to be thankful that luck hadn’t entirely deserted him. “How are you holding up?” Jonathan asked.
“It’s bad,” he got out.
He’d been in worse shape over the years but this isn’t something he can brush off like he had so many of the other times after hot races. He had a feeling that this time ice just won’t cut it and that’s going to pose all sorts of problems. Obviously he was going to have to start thinking about trying to increase his tolerance to the sun when he got over this. Or demand better team gear. “How bad?” Jonathan asked.
He stayed silent and watched as understanding crossed his manager’s face. He’d never liked that look, he’d seen if far too many times during his lifetime on the faces of others. Fortunately it had never been directed at him but apparently now that was all about to change. “Looks like you might have to change a few of your preference,” Jonathan teased.
He really wasn’t in the mood for levity right now. “No,” he insisted.
“Don’t be ridiculous, you know I can’t,” there’s more commotion from the room that makes Jonathan pause. “We’re at a race and bags of... coffee beans would raise suspicions.”
Murilo rolls his eyes at Jonathan’s attempts to be discreet. Last time it had been spanners if he remembered correctly and he’d hoped he’d never have to hear anything so ridiculous again. Apparently he’d been a bit too optimistic about the chances of that happening. Tyler walked in carrying more ice that was soon in the bath. “That’s enough,” Jonathan said.
“We’ll see how far the ice gets me,” Murilo stated.
Tyler’s heart was beating faster than normal and it was starting to distract Murilo. Normally if they were sharing a room together he’d try to identify the reason but it’s immaterial right now. Tyler might be completely unaware of the danger he was in but Murilo wasn’t. His control was fragile at best and Jonathan wouldn’t stop him if he stopped exercising it. He glanced across at his boss who for once seemed to get the message. “Why don’t you go see what Julian’s up to?” Jonathan suggested.
At any other time Murilo would’ve laughed at the expression on Tyler’s face that clearly said he thought their boss was crazy. “I want to-”
“I need to deal with this right now so you’ll have to wait until later,” JV persisted.
When Murilo saw the determined look on Tyler’s face it occurred to him that his friend wasn’t going to leave any time soon. He was horrified when Tyler moved closer and sat down on the side of the bath just out of reach of his fingers. “I don’t want you here,” he snapped.
Tyler looked at him confused, “but-”
He refused to allow himself to be tempted by the confusion and the hurt expression. This was too important for him to get wrong and he would just have to deal with the fallout later. “Get out!”
“Murilo-”
“Now!”
There was a brief hesitation and Murilo worried that it might not be enough, that Tyler might not leave, before he got up off the side of the bath. “I’ll check on you later.”
The utter relief Murilo felt when Tyler left the room was nearly overwhelming. Now the sound of Tyler’s heart beating was less intense the urgency to feed lessened and afforded Murilo the opportunity to hope that he might manage to hold out until a suitable arrangement could be made. He chose to ignore the thoughtful expression Jonathan had on his face as he watched Tyler leave. “That was abrupt.”
“It got the job done and that’s all that matters,” Murilo stated as his fingers dispersed the ice more evenly in the bath.
“Why make him leave at all?” Jonathan asked. “You’re just making solving our problem more difficult than it needs to be.”
He was forced to acknowledge that he hadn’t helped himself out with that statement. Nevertheless he’s not going to change his mind. He’s made his decision and his eating habits are none of Jonathan’s business. “We’re not talking about this,” he said quietly.
“The team’s pretty banged up, it wouldn’t really make that much of a difference.”
“No,” he dismissed and sunk back down into the ice water.
He closed his eyes and enjoyed the way the cool water lapped at his skin. It would be fun if not for the circumstance he was in and he made a note to try this out when he could enjoy it. His icemaker might object to being made to work quite that hard but he could live with that. “It’d be easy enough to hide if you picked the right one,” Jonathan continued on regardless. “Tyler’s pretty banged up and I know the two of you are... close.”
Murilo opened his eyes to glare at his boss. That comment was uncalled for but Jonathan didn’t even have the decency to look apologetic. This is what happened when you associated with too many of the wrong people - it warped your thinking. Hunger always made him grouchy and today was no exception. “Let me cool down and I’ll worry about it later.”
“Ignoring the problem is not going to make it go away, Murilo. We’re at a race and the only way you’re going to get blood is from a live donor,” Jonathan stated dropping any attempts at being discreet.
Murilo took it as a hint that he looked really bad because Jonathan had a strict no talking about anything incriminating where they could be overheard. If he could make it until tomorrow when the team left then it’d be easy enough to solve the problem. He just had to last til then. “Someone can hook me up when you’re gone.”
He immersed himself in the bathwater and smiled at the cool water against his face. He let himself enjoy it for a few moments before he decided it was probably better that his knees not be sticking out of the water and pushed himself back up again. “You’re being ridiculous,” Jonathan said. “Tyler would probably really enjoy-”
Murilo’s growl was all the warning Jonathan got before his hand grabbed hold of relatively unruffled team issue clothing and the Brazilian bared his fangs. “Don’t ever mention that again,” Murilo instructed.
“You’re very touchy for your age,” Jonathan attempted to joke.
Murilo snarled again for good measure before letting go. At least there were perks to getting to his age even if for most of this conversation they’d been missing. Jonathan looked like he was going to say something else when his phone started ringing. He pulled it out, looked at the caller id and stood up. “I’ve got to go check in with the rest of the team,” he said by way of explanation. “I’ll be back to check on you later.”
Murilo nodded and settled back in the water. Hopefully if he sat in the bath long enough he’d solve the problem and he wouldn’t be forced to listen to Jonathan’s suggestions again. He didn’t really believe that but it would at least give him a few minutes peace so he’d take it. “Yeah?” Jonathan said into the phone as he left the room.
The ice wasn’t lessening the hunger so when Jonathan came back they’d have to come up with a plan that would keep Tyler out of his way. The challenge would hopefully keep Jonathan occupied long enough for him to avoid more awkward questions.
Murilo was feeling worse by the time the door opened again and he wasn’t really in the mood for Jonathan to start pushing the team towards him again. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to resist the temptation a second time. “That should be everything sorted with everyone else until the morning,” Jonathan said as he leant against the sink. “Now it’s just you to deal with.”
“Lucky me!”
The hotel was quieter now than it had been earlier and that’s just the way he likes it at the minute. Neither of them say anything for a while and he supposed there was nothing really to say in situations like this. It’s certainly one of the more difficult ones they’ve been in over the years. “I can get you more ice,” Jonathan offered.
The door to the hotel room opened and he can hear Tyler shuffling around in the other room. Obviously it was a bit late to discuss how to keep Tyler away and he looks at Jonathan who is studying the grouting on the floor a little too closely for his liking. “You still alive in there?” Tyler asked.
Murilo threw a small sliver of ice at Jonathan when he started laughing. The bleak mood that had settled gets dispersed if only momentarily and Murilo thinks maybe they needed a little levity injected into the situation earlier. When Tyler appeared in the doorway he looked confused. “I’m good,” Murilo lied.
Tyler glanced across at Jonathan and then back at Murilo mindful of what had happened earlier. “Can I get you anything? More ice?”
Murilo wasn’t sure he liked this Tyler, the one that was unsure of his welcome. He much preferred the one who was pushy and sometimes ‘forgot’ where he was putting his hands. “I’m fine,” Murilo’s gaze ran over Tyler. “Thanks.”
Tyler’s heartbeat is steady and almost hypnotic as he comes closer. Murilo wonders if Tyler tastes as good as he smells. It’s probably a safe bet but it would be best to make sure. Murilo’s hands itch to reach out and pull Tyler closer. “I should probably go make sure everyone’s in their rooms,” Jonathan said as Tyler moved out of the doorway.
Murilo had forgotten the other vampire was there and he didn’t take his eyes off Tyler as Jonathan left the room. He was probably going to regret this very soon but he was almost certain it would be worth it. “If you’re feeling better how about you get out of the water? Can’t have my leadout man turning into an ice cube before tomorrow,” Tyler teased.
Murilo frowned at the mention of someone else, “Julian’s fine.”
“I know he is, I was just in his room,” Tyler said smoothly as he came to sit on the side of the bath. “I wasn’t talking about him.”
Murilo breathed in Tyler’s scent and felt the pull towards him strengthen. He was so hungry and it would be relatively easy to take what he wanted. Would it really hurt if he decided Jonathan had made a good suggestion after all? “Tyler,” he murmured.
“How long are we going to ignore this thing between us?”
He knew what the answer should be, that he’d ignore it as long as it took but now it was so difficult to say the words. He licked his lips and felt a different sort of need stir inside him. Tyler’s fingertips skimmed the surface of the water coming closer to him. He grabbed Tyler’s wrist and heard the way Tyler’s heart began to beat faster at the contact. “Taking advantage of a captive audience?” Murilo asked.
“Something like that,” Tyler replied and he felt himself smile.
Tyler had always been the brave one of the two of them, always been willing to push the boundaries a little and say the things that needed to be said. If he’d been half that sure then there wouldn’t still be an important secret between them. Today would’ve been easier and his weakening self control wouldn’t be as problematic.
He longed to sink his fangs into the pale skin before him, to taste everything Tyler had to offer and know there were no secrets between them. Instinct told him that once he felt the warm blood rushing over his tongue and down his throat he’d wonder why he’d resisted for so long.
Murilo licked his lips again and tugged on the wrist he had hold of. Tyler obligingly came a lot closer and now he can’t remember one reason why this would be a bad idea. Now all the very good reasons why they shouldn’t do this are being overwhelmed by hunger and Tyler’s all encompassing presence. “Murilo.”
Lips touched his and even though this wasn’t the sort of kiss he craved he didn’t push Tyler away. He’d get what he wanted soon enough. When the kiss ended he brought Tyler’s arm up to his mouth and pressed lips to it. “You’re not going to do something weird-?”
The words were abruptly cut off when Murilo’s fangs broke through the skin. He faintly remembered that he was meant to do this somewhere less conspicuous but he couldn’t bring himself the care as he finally got the sustenance he’d been craving.
He’s not sure who moans and he doesn’t care as flavours explode on his tongue. He’s never tasted anything so good and he just wants more of it. He should probably savour it but it’s just so much, too much, it’s like he’s been plugged into Tyler and nothing else exists outside that. It’s been so long since he fed on someone he’s out of practise.
He barely registered Tyler falling into the bathwater as he tried not to let any of the delicious blood escape across pale skin and into the water. His eyes brought the world back into sharp focus when he noticed the way Tyler sucked in a breath and his body stiffened. Murilo was torn between finishing what he started and the need to get Tyler out of the water. If he stopped he might not get another chance to do this again but he wasn’t exactly hungry any more....
He removed his mouth disgusted at himself when Tyler started to shiver. This had been a very bad idea, he concluded moments before he licked at the puncture marks to stop the bleeding. Would it really hurt if he didn’t stop just yet? He chanced a look at Tyler and saw his confusion mirrored back to him. However he also noted how Tyler skin had a faint blue tinge to it and Murilo yanked the plug out of the bath. Time to get out.
It turned out to be more complicated than he’d anticipated because neither of them were exactly steady. He needed more time to recover but Tyler couldn’t wait to be warmed up again. Help came in the form of Jonathan’s arms hauling Tyler out of the bath and giving him enough time to get to his feet, brush off the ice and step onto the tiled floor.
He hated the way Jonathan had grabbed a towel and was now taking Tyler out of the bathroom. He wanted to snatch his friend back and make sure Jonathan knew that this was absolutely off limits. Then he wobbled and had to grab hold of the sink. Okay maybe just this once he should accept help...
