“You worried somebody’s going to catch us?” Jeremy asked when Taylor looked around the restaurant yet again.

He was for being cautious as much as the next guy but this was getting ridiculous. This is what he got for going out on a date with someone five years younger than he was. Never again was he going to contemplate doing something so rash again. He knew this would be a mistake from the beginning! “I like to know what’s going on.”

Jeremy wasn’t buying that for a second but if that was how Taylor wanted to play it then that was fine with him. “Shall we go?”

Without waiting for a reply he pushed his chair back and walked away from the table. This charade had gone on long enough and there were plenty of other things he could be doing. Obviously they should have left things well alone after their online encounter. Some things just didn’t work out in person.

He pushed away the disappointment as he stepped out of the restaurant and into the cool night air. They’d sent a few flirty texts and that was it, they hadn’t made any promises. That stupid USOC poll had a lot to answer for. He was faintly surprised when Taylor caught up with him just as he was entering the parking lot. “Talk about eat and run,” Taylor said.

He couldn’t stop himself from smiling but when he found himself wishing things could be different the smile faded. He reached into his pocket for his car keys and he saw Taylor glance across at him. “You not going to say anything?”

“Hadn’t planned on it,” he replied.

He pressed the button on his fob to unlock the car and that’s when Taylor grabbed his arm. They stopped just before Jeremy’s car and he wasn’t quite sure what the point in this was. “I suck at first dates,” Taylor started.

“Ya think?”

That had probably been uncalled for but the words had just come out before he’d really thought them through. “Quit being an ass, I’m trying to explain here.”

Jeremy wondered how often that happened but he bit back the sharp comment he almost made. He wasn’t that sort of guy and just because it had gone badly didn’t mean he couldn’t be gracious about it. When there were no more interruptions Taylor continued with what he was saying. “I wanted to make a good first impression because I really like you.”

“Sometimes things just don’t work out, it’s nobody’s fault.”

“No, that’s not what this is!”

Jeremy pulled his arm in an attempt to free it from Taylor’s grasp but all that succeeded in doing was bringing Taylor closer. “Just let-”

Taylor’s lips brushed his and made him fall silent. He reached out with his free hand and brought Taylor closer. The brevity of the kiss didn’t stop Jeremy from wanting another one. This time he was more aware of Taylor’s lips against his and he wondered how someone who was as bad at first dates as Taylor professed had got to be so good at this. When Taylor eventually moved back he tried not to think about how all he’d done was make the situation way more complicated than it had been before. “Like I said, I’m bad at first dates, especially when I really like someone. I’d appreciate it if you’d over look that and let me have another go.”

Maybe he had been a little hasty to dismiss Taylor. Would it really hurt if he gave this a second chance? The worst he’d do was waste a few hours but maybe he might come out of it with something better. It always took him a while to work out the kinks in a new programme and this wasn’t much different. “We can go for coffee,” he offered. “Less pressure that way if it goes badly.”

Taylor smiled. “Tomorrow?”

“Eager much?”

“I like to undo bad impressions as quickly as possible.”

Taylor let go of his arm and Jeremy found he missed the contact. He really should be getting back, it was late and he had an early practise tomorrow. Taylor didn’t seem any more eager to put an end to their disastrous first date either. “I’m free any time after lunch.”

“I’ll text you,” Taylor promised.

Jeremy pulled open the front door of his car and got in as Taylor walked away. He really hoped tomorrow would go better than it had tonight. He didn’t know what it was but there was just something about Taylor. If it was just first date jitters then maybe he’d get to explore what it was that made him want things to go well between them.
