A reflection on the 2008 presidential election

So Obama won. McCain lost. Can we kindly continue on with our lives?

The result of the election neither disappoints me, nor does it make me leap for joy. I'm actually quite mixed about the whole thing; more mixed than I thought I would be.

There's plenty of white southern people who voted for McCain based on the color of his skin. There are certainly uneducated votes on both side. Also, I think Obama's viewpoints rose above race this election. If anything, we voted for the first biracial president ever. He is no more white than he is black.

Also, it doesn't help that blacks tend to be a very cohesive voting bloc, just like GLBT people who tend to vote democrat. Many women voted for Hilary and I bet many GLBT people would vote for a gay or lesbian candidate. That just shows that within these groups, there are several attributes that they all identify with, a sense of struggle. White people, particularly males, tend to not have that common thread.

As for Iraq, I don't understand the reasons why we went to Iraq. We went into Iraq with the premise that Saddam had tools of destruction that could harm the United States. While there were people being suppressed under him, that's not why we went. While what we did in Iraq is admirable, we cannot invade other countries when we fail to take care of ourselves. I think it's a good idea to pull out of Iraq because no one wants us there, including the president of Iraq, and they are in a surplus while we are in a deficit. We must fix problems at home before we can fix problems abroad.

I'd recommend the movie Good Night, and Good Luck. Even though its a different subject matter, its kinda parallel to your last sentence.
