If something is broken, is it worth it to spend all the time fixing it, or just rebuild it from the ground up.  Keep it in mind.

if something is broken it's always worth fixing. no matter what.

I disagree but the point you are making is not related to this topic. Moreover, what I mean is that before spending all of the time fixing something, perhaps its best to start over. This applies to all things.

I was at work and for some reason a file I was working on became either corrupt or broken or who knows what and wouldn't work; so I spend hours trying to fix one single problem. By the end of the day I had to resort to recreating the file and getting it to the point where I last left off. As it turns out, simply restarting took 30 minutes as apposed to 4 hours of trial and error.

Lesson learned, and shared.

although i bet through all the frustration of trying to fix the original repair, you learned something possibly new. and with that, its not always best to just give up on a problem, wipe the slate clean and start over. dont make time the main factor to your reasoning. there is plenty of time in this life.

I never said give up nor said that I did myself. I spent an entire day on the problem and stayed later when I didn't have to. Time is essential in my profession, but regardless I never once wrote about permitting giving up. Yes, sometimes starting over on something is the smarter thing to do and overall is what teaches you more ( for example, having to recreate my file made me memorize the steps it took to create it in the first place)
