Amidst the hustle and bustle, the fireworks and the merrymaking during New Year's Eve, our entire family was grieving over the loss of a dear loved one. My favorite uncle, Uncle Rey, passed away due to cancer on the 30th, and the rest of our family gathered together on the 31st for his funeral. He was only 33.

Uncle Rey was practically like a brother to me, the big brother I never had. He helped me with projects and my self-esteem through High School, and was also a big help to us financially while I was in College. When I thought I had to stop schooling because the family business suddenly had to close, he was there to support my sister and I. He was a hardworking guy, and I had so much respect for him.

We'd learned about his cancer three years ago, and they had to move to the States so he could get the best medication. Early last year, we received news that he was already well and the cancer had disappeared, so it was quite a shock to everyone when the cancer came back and grew at such a rapid pace.

It was difficult looking at Uncle Rey during his last days, and though it pains me to think that we will never see him again, the thought of him being free from all the pain makes me happy. He is with his Creator now, and the rest of the family is praying for the peace of his soul.

Uncle Rey, you will be missed.
