Finally, it has come to the point where I have no choice but to comment on Hana Yori Dango (The japanese one! I don't care what you people say about how Meteor Garden is the original or better. Watch this one first!!) Let's get straight to the description, DramaWiki: "Makino Tsukushi is the only poor student at Eitoku Gakuen, the school of the ridiculously rich and privileged that is ruled by Flower 4 or F4, a group of four boys who come from extremely powerful families: Domyoji Tsukasa, the leader and heir of the Domyoji World Finance Group; Hanazawa Rui, the introverted son of a large company; Nishikado Sojiro, a player who is the heir of a tea ceremony school; and Mimasaka Akira, a madam killer with ties to the underground. If a student gets on the F4’s bad side, he/she gets a red notice and is bullied and driven out of school. Makino hopes to pass her days quietly-- without drawing any attention to herself-- but one day, she stands up to Domyoji in defense of her friend. The next day, Makino gets the dreaded red notice. Even though she is harassed, Makino decides to keep going to school because she is a "tough weed". She declares war right back on the F4. Her resolve gets the attention of her crush Hanazawa Rui and oddly enough, rouses romantic feelings in her worst enemy, Domyoji Tsukasa." KKKKYAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! I never "kya" so you better pay attention.
Let me tell you the back story to my encounter with Hana Yori Dango (HYD). Before I knew about japanese dramas, I was into anime, and manga. One day, during summer vacation, my cousins and I happened to go to a library. Library in the summer~ Obviously the crazy person I was, I headed straight to the manga, oh I'm sorry, "graphic novels" section. I borrowed Hana Yori Dango. I didn't like the drawing style, so that threw me off. Also, the main character, Domyoji, pissed me off. His character AND the way he was drawn AND the fact that I didn't like the main character but rather Hanazawa Rui. Three strikes, it was out after the first volume. About 2-3 years passed. I then started watching japanese dramas. My first one was Hana Kimi (2007). Because of Oguri Shun, I decided to find dramas with Oguri Shun. I found HYD. However, with my past traumatic experience, I swore that I wouldn't watch it. But then I got bored...
So I watched it. At first, it was true. I didn't like the character Domyoji and his curly hair, just like the manga. But he grew on me. Matsumoto Jun is HOT! I guess I never gave the manga a chance. Matsumoto Jun pulled it off beautifully. The drama kept me satisfied through the first two seasons and the movie. His character, he stance, everything was well done. Cast was perfect. Music great. Acting I loved. The set became nostalgic. Domyoji is TOO funny for words.
I would like to say Hana Kimi set off my interest in japanese dramas, but really, this was the launch pad. Hana Kimi only took me there. I will never forget HYD.
Considering the amount of fans of Matsumoto-san's, this drama is good for all ages. For women more than men? Yes, in my opinion but that doesn't mean men shouldn't give it a chance. Everyone has their own opinion. I would say that it really appeals to the younger women though. That was the target audience I guess.
Not many of the flashy, commercial dramas I watch gets this score, but...
10 out of 10
If I were to give it a standing ovation, I would. I wasn't the only one affected by this drama. It will be with everyone, forever. Oh, and the ending of the movie... I couldn't have thought of a better one.
