reworking a dress, part deux.
Ugh....so I finally finished the second and final redux of the "LIHI" dress. I decided to model the dress after older lolita designs (circa 2008 and earlier). Anyway, here's the dress...
Torchon Lace Princess JSK Set
DRESS: For the redux, I decided to turn the overskirt around and do a bustle-style skirt. From there, I pored through hours and hours of google images for old school style lolita dresses and came up with this design. It's a mix of a few traditional designs but with an updated skirt width. Also, since it was a bustle overskirt, I was limited with what I could do with it since I didn't have a lot of extra fabric to work with anyway.
DETAILS: If there's anything that I like about the dress, It's the bodice. I've been wanting to experiment with the ruffle front look for a while now and I love how this turned out. I also really like the corset lacing in the front but would probably not lace it through the actual trim next time. I also redid the back shirring and added the lace. lots and lots of lace on this dress. For the headbow, I tried to replicate BtSSB's Cameron headbow. Good effort, but I don't like the execution. *sigh* I feel like there's too much black on there....
COORDINATE: So here's what the set look like with a blouse underneath. It's not bad, but it's not exactly great either. I have to say, making an old-school style dress is harder than I thought it would be, especially if it's got contrasting trim. There's so much you have to think about, design-wise. It probably didn't help that I don't have the right skirt to start with. lesson learned. :/
BEFORE AND AFTER: The side-by-side comparison from the original. I don't think it's as striking as the Lavender Dolls Redux, but it's certainly better than the original. I can't help but think "Oh no, MILANOOO!!!" everytime I see this, so I may not wear this that often. You know what it is? It's that red and black combination. It is SOOOO hard to make that combo work without having it scream cosplay. Especially that color red. That also tells me that I'm not at that level of design where I can successfully do red and black. One day....one day.....!! -_-;
