Sadly I don't think better written fiction would've changed his mind on the issue. It's just kind of weird reading about yourself like that, or your friends. It might not have grossed him out, but he'd still be weirded out.

Vile seems so much more than just weirded out, though. And there's so much out there that isn't! There's tons of gen, and a lot of really sweet stuff.
