My Chemical Romance is hitting on all cylinders.
Their new album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys is out today (it hit iTunes on Friday). The band just announced their 2011 World Contamination Tour. Tonight the band's album release concert will be streamed live on MTV.com at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT.
And one of the band's new songs, Planetary (GO!), appears on the PlayStation 3 game Gran Turismo 5, which gets out of the gate tomorrow. Game Hunters recently talked to My Chemical Romance rhythm guitarist Frank Iero about all the band's activities.
Why is the song a good fit for the video game?
It's weird when we were writing this song and hearing it back through speakers while we were playing we said this is the kind of song you want to drive really fast and listen to. So we actually burned a CD and actually got out into our cars and drove entirely too fast while listening to it to kind of get that feel to finish the song.
When it actually did get finished they approached us about it we were like, this song is perfect for (Gran Turismo 5) and they agreed. So now you can drive really fast and listen to it even at home. So it is kind of a great fit.
Can you describe Planetary (GO!)?
If I were to describe the song it would be basically, the party at the end of the world. Excuse the connection, but it is a high octane kind of song. I would say, too, it is possibly one of our most experimental songs on this record.
What is the new album like?
The album is definitely a departure from our last record in feels and imagery and in concepts. We've been saying that this record really is not a concept record as much as it is a high concept. You get introduced into this world of a dystopian future kind of thing. It's not so much a story where find a beginning, middle and end. But you do get into some characters and you do find a world that hopefully you get introduced to and want to live in and experience for yourself.
The idea was to strip it down but the more we did that the more we felt it called for other things. When writing this record we started experimenting with instruments that we really hadn't played with before. More electronic synthesizers and keyboards and things like that. And that's how we started to shape some of these songs. Things are already stripped down melody-wise but the amount of work and layers are still there. It's very much a My Chem record. It's very boombastic and epic, really.
Are you and the rest of the band gamers?
Absolutely. We have been playing video games and board games, I guess, since really young ages. It's one of our favorite pastimes on the road. Everybody has got a system in their bunk and then there's two systems in the front and back. Guitar Hero competitions, you name it, we play it.
Do you have a favorite game or genre?
Anything that is fun. I've loved the Gran Turismo games over the years. I've been looking forward to this game for a very long time. It feels real. It really is the best racing game out there. And to be involved in a launch like this is nothing like I could ever imagine. To get to play this and play it with your own song in the game is ridiculous.
Other games, Madden is always a fun game to play. And I just got done playing God of War III, which I thought was incredible. … I was lucky, I got to finish it right before my girls were born so I got that out of my system. Now I'm waiting to have to go on tour so that I can actually play games again.
