So what is up with all the little cute responses a lot of people give when asked what religion they are? A lot of modern evangelical Christians seem to shudder at the use of even the word Christian, not to mention the notion of religion in general. I notice this a lot on Facebook (which for those of you who don’t know is a social networking website). It gives you a little place to put Religious Views in your profile for everyone to see:
I’m not sure exactly why people would choose not to be identified with the rest of the church, but I have some ideas. Some are more legitimate than others perhaps, but I still don’t quite understand. See some people, usually nondenominational types, are offended at the notion of putting anything other than Christian there. And because of the number of people who put Christian - Whatever denomination, apparently get up in arms. Others seem to feel that putting “Christian” is somehow cliche. All in all, the issue seems to be the present state of the evangelical church at large in America. It seems weird to me to distance yourself from 2000 years of church history just because you think that some Christians in this country might be embarrassing you. I can understand not putting a denomination name, especially given the number of non Christian or non religious friends who will probably look at that. But not putting Christian at all just seems like you don’t really believe in anything. I dunno, maybe its not a big deal, but it bothers me slightly because I feel like they are passing judgment on the rest of the church body, and that does include me.
