Dawn 1/1
Spring. The season of change. For most, it symbolized peace and beauty; a world starting anew. Flowers lost during the harsh cold now bloomed with new life, and the birds chirped with a renewed vigor as they began the hunt for their mate. The sun shone, lending its warmth to the world, and melting the ice that once encased it, leaving the once cold and bleak world to be reborn in a flurry of colors and passion. To most it symbolized hope.
Yet for one, all he could find in the season was despair. Once he had been like the others, rejoicing at new possibilities and naively falling in love. But now, even as the world moved on around him, he was still stuck in the bleak world of winter.
Once, he would have been standing on that cliff with another, both hand-in-hand as they watched the sunset together, reveling in the beauty of the end of one day, and anxiously awaiting the start of the other. Once, he would have been excited for dawn as it lead to a new day, a time of hope and new experiences. A lot could be done in a day. In a day, people can be introduced into the world, meet new people (both good and bad), and forge new bonds. In a day, one could fall in love.
In a day, one could lose that love.
It was almost dawn, and the sky had just barely begun its change from a dark, indigo to a light blue. The sky to the east was now a dark violet, not yet the dark rosy pink that foretold the coming day. Just a week ago, this had been Sungmin's favorite time of the day. Now, all it symbolized was tears and heartache.
Sungmin smiled happily, leaning into the chest of the one he loved, and basking in the feeling of the other's body so close and the feeling of the other's arm wrapped around his small waist as they had slept together in the darkness that blanketed the earth. But now it was time for the blanket to be lifted, and Sungmin giggled softly before proceeding to poke his lover's soft cheek.
"Kyu~ Wake up."
The other shifted slightly and groaned, then snuggled back into Sungmin, tightening his hold on the smaller boy.
Sungmin scowled slightly at his boyfriend's lazy antics. "Yah! Wake up!" He got up, causing the other to whimper at the loss of contact, and stood above him. The brunette just turned around, and soon his breathing began to even out, showing the other was fast falling asleep.
"Cho Kyuhyun! Get up you lazy ass!" Sungmin yelled, aiming a kick at the other’s vulnerable butt. The other grunted in pain as his rear came into contact with an unforgiving foot and turned back around, opening one eye sleepily.
"Can't we just go back to sleep?"
Sungmin pouted. "No! See? Dawn is almost coming!" He pointed to the east, where the edges of the sun's light had just began to peak over the dark mountains across from their spot. Sungmin turned back to his lover with a smile, thinking he'd finally won, but that smile turned upside down as he noticed that his boyfriend had just rolled around and closed his eyes. Sungmin sighed sadly, giving up. "Fine you can go back to sleep," he said dejectedly, his m-shaped lips pouting sadly.
Kyuhyun sighed, giving in to the other's will as he heard the depressing voice. "Fine I'll get up." He sat up quickly, and stretched before walking over to where his other half was sitting, feet dangling over the edge of the cliff and lips pouting. He sat down next to his boyfriend, and slipped an arm around his waist.
"What's so special about the sunrise anyways?"
Sungmin smiled at Kyuhyun, glad that the younger had given in, then replied, "The sunrise is special because it symbolizes the start of a new day."
"So?"
Sungmin sighed exasperatedly, "So a lot can happen in a day!"
"Alright, alright." Kyuhyun smiled at Sungmin, and placed a light kiss on the top of his head.
Sungmin turned to him, and wondered "Why aren't you watching the sunset, Kyu?"
"Because I have something much more beautiful to watch right here."
Sungmin blushed, and slapped the other playfully. "Yah! That was too cheesy!"
"Yet you smiled."
Sungmin laughed softly, and playfully placed a peck on the other’s lips.
And then they wrapped themselves in their own little world, the sunset long forgotten.
Sungmin's eyes shone with unshed tears as he stood on the very same cliff where that memory, and many others, had taken place. The cliff had remained unchanged, even though one of its frequent occupants had left the world. Sungmin grimaced. It wasn't fair that someone so important had left his world, yet everything else still went on unchanged. It had been less than a week since his other half had lost the battle with cancer, and Sungmin was ready to die along with him. Yet something stopped him.
"Please promise me you'll live well for me." Kyuhyun's voice was alarmingly weak.
"I can't live without you." Tears were streaming down Sungmin's cheeks as he grasped the dry hand of his boyfriend.
"You can, and you will. Do this for me, Sungmin." With one last bit of strength, he reached up and wiped the tears from Sungmin's face, and then his hand fell back against the bed, his strength abandoning him. "I love you..." Kyuhyun's voice trailed off, and the hand in Sungmin's turned cold as he finally lost the long battle against his illness.
"Kyuhyun..." Sungmin's eyes filled with tears and he sobbed, mourning the end of his love.
He promised he wouldn't die, and that he'd continue living unconditionally, yet he couldn't. It hurt too much. It was as if Kyuhyun has taken his heart with him as he died, leaving a black hole in Sungmin's chest where it once was. No, not taken his heart. If Kyuhyun had taken his heart, then the pain wouldn't be so intense. There were no words to describe how he felt now.
A single year escaped, and slid down Sungmin's face. He wiped it away hastily. He promised he wouldn't cry. He promised.
The sun had just barely begun to peak over the mountaintops, turning the sky a yellow-orange, and Sungmin made his decision. Putting his hand over his heart, he closed his eyes, and locked away his heart. He would stop feeling unnecessary emotions, and just walk the earth emotionlessly. It was the only way.
His face blank, he turned from the cliff for once and for all, and walked away to a new life.
