Since the LJ redirect, I have been given a free rename token.

I must ask you, Friends list/people randomly looking at my journal... should I use the rename token?

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ENTRY!!! PLEASEEEEEEEE HELP ME!!!!

Yeah, you should use it, if only to safeguard against any security vulnerabilities. Just remember, no dashes at the beginning or end of the username.

having an underscore at the beginning or end of your username entitles you to a free rename token, since it doesn't work with the new URLS.

With the new system, they are doing a new URL for all the users. If you have an underscore before or after your username, you get a free rename token because it doesn't work with the new system and it'll appear as "http://users.livejournal.com/username" instead of "http://username.livejournal.com"
