One thing that's really bad ass about the internet...

I'm a sucker history. My fascination in history is perhaps a bit different in that I like to study eras. Not just music, or war, or whatever, but I like to get a good complete picture of what the whole time was like. I tend to pick eras post 1900 just because I am able to relate to and comprehend it a little better. My theory on this is because I really enjoy reading source material. Things that were actually written in that time. I much prefer reading that and forming my own thoughts on it than reading someone's abridged version. I mean, I will if I have to, but yeah. I love reading magazine articles from the past. It gives you a really good sense of what pop culture was like and what communication styles were like. It's interesting to see what the focus of others was in any given period straight from the horse's mouth.

It'd always been somewhat difficult or inconvenient to find said past articles or whatever. Many rare movies of the past are destroyed because of fucking bullshit copyright rules that never allow the copyright to expire thus never allows the movie to go into public domain. Many movie studios would run out of room and simply destroy the not-as-popular films' originals to save space. Since the studios had exclusive rights, the movies were destroyed forever. It's a shame and it's one big reason I hate copyright with an avid passion. I hate copyrighting for any number of reasons, really. Art needs to be accessible 100% of the time to 100% of the people on this planet for NO COST. If we make people pay for this crap FOREVER then guess what, culture doesn't get passed down. Can you IMAGINE copyrighting fucking Egyptian hieroglyphs? Do you think DaVinci was Mr Awesomely Rich??? We all have the right to make money but DAMN. And because I hate giving money to people who aren't going to even take care of the shit they own even though they didn't make it, I'm forced to steal most of my media. I WANT to pay for it. I WANT the artist to have money for their amazing contributions to world culture. But for the life of me I can NOT give money to evil people if I don't have to. Movie studios relatively have their shit together so I'll pay to go see a movie, but the big 5 record labels HAVE TO GO. Record execs are douchebags who are out to steal money from kids. Why the hell do they insist on the shitty album format where there's like one or two good songs on the whole thing? Why did they do away with A La Carte? They thankfully have that on Itunes, but another weird thing is how labels don't release packages of an artist's complete discography. I don't know HOW many times I've bought the same The Who song because it was on a greatest hits album that had another song on it that I didn't have originally. I'm relieved and starting to feel a lot better about the state of music with bands like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails self-releasing their albums with a sliding pay scale. This is the future, people.

Anyways, I have completely gotten off track here.

What I meant to get to is the fact that a lot of magazines that have been around for nearly 50 years or more. I always found it fascinating to read old editions. I just discovered that you can now do this on People Magazine's website and National Geographic's website. FOR FREE.

And that is pretty freakin awesome. My brain is very happy by this discovery.

random mind stuff, music, awesome
