Summary: Barney proposes in true Barney style; Robin reacts accordingly
A/N: for the great
ellensmithee When he takes out the box from Tiffany's, Robin takes one look at it and says, “That better be a tie clip.”
So, you know, not how he practiced it with Ted and Marshall.
“Robin Scherbatsky,” he begins, trying to push through, but Robin has already gotten out of bed, grabbing her discarded dress.
“Seriously, Barney?! Seriously?!”
He has to move quickly to avoid catching a stiletto to the forehead. “What?! Why are you mad?! This is supposed to be romantic!”
“Romantic?” Robin parrots, her eyes wide with anger. “You thought this was going to make a romantic story to tell our friends?”
“Well, yeah! There's flowers and candles and I bought a ring - “
“I do not want to spend the next fifty years telling people we got engaged five minutes after we got done having sex! A wedding proposal is not supposed to be preceded by a high-five over my flexibility!”
“Hey, I believe in positive reinforcement!” Quickly dodging the other stiletto, he shouts, “You always say you feel the closest to me after we have sex!”
“But that's not how you propose! You hide the ring in a piece of cake or put on a cigar or something I can tell my father about without him coming down from the Great White North to turn you into a hat!”
Hearing the logic in her words, Barney sits back against the pillows. “Oh.” Staring down at the pale blue box, he lamely offers, “I thought you'd like this.”
Robin softens, sinking back onto the mattress. Holding out her hand, she asks, “Can I see my ring?”
Barney obediently sets it in her palm. She opens the box and whistles. “You could play the Stanley Cup on this.” As Barney nods in agreement, Robin plucks it from its velvet resting place, sliding it firming upon her ring finger, extending her hand to admire the sight of it on. “Man, Lily is going to be so jealous.”
Barney's head jerks up. “Are you saying yes?”
Robin scoffs. “Of course I'm saying yes.” Kissing him briefly through their grins, Robin lies back down, snuggling up to his side. “But when my parents ask, you did this in a horse-drawn carriage.”
Barney smiles against her hair. “Deal.”
