Guilden in the Morning

4 am and the streets are almost silent

a lone girl staggers along the cracked pavement

alternating the click of a heel and the slap of a bare foot

curtains across the street are parted slightly

light reflects from puddles in the road

a catcall comes from the opening in the window

she passes from darkness to streetlight

darkness to streetlight, they are lined up perfectly all along

a tabby cat slinks from underneath a car

one ear is half missing

he has part of a sandwich in his mouth

looks like bologna

it drops when the girl stumbles

arms flailing she stays upright

one last streetlight and she enters the darkness for good

everything is still
