So the last few months of my life can be summed up in two short words: quiet and loud. Not a whole lot of middle ground either really. Allow me to elaborate for a bit on this if you will.
The quiet part would be in reference to anytime I'm at work or here at home. Right now my job is in a period of down time. We haven't had a whole lot to do since mid January. This won't change till mid May at the earliest. Then if things go as they normally do we'll have plenty to do for the next six months. I'll be happy when it picks up because the days can get kind of long when we don't have much going on. It's safe to say that my day job is simply a means to an end for me.
Most of the time I spend at home any more sees me either online, relaxing in my recliner in front of the TV and sleeping. I don't receive that many phone calls any more unless it's my parents or occasionally one of my close friends. Most of my business with the outside world these days is done via email so the amount of calls anymore is not very many. Since I live alone it does get pretty lonely and a little TO quiet sometimes. But for the most part this is a welcome thing considering how much my life changes once I step out the front door.
The loud part is in reference to everything else I do with my life. A big part of that is my band. When I joined Honeywagen three and a half years ago I was told we would play 2 to 4 shows a month. We have never not had a gig booked and we always have something to look forward to. So needless to say we got shows booked till mid June now which makes me pretty happy. The last year has seen us share the stage with some of the very best rock bands in this area including Pendergast, The Federation of Horsepower, The Bubble Boys, The Gaslights, Cher UK, Deathray Angles, The Deadenders, Octopus Frontier, Wyld Chipmunk and The Cuddly Poo's, Choad, Emma Feel and Mr. Cody Wyoming (and hopefully we'll get do another show with Cody's band The Golden Hearted Whores sooner then later). It's a pretty awesome and humbling feeling to know that we have gotten to share the stage with so many good friends and incredibly talented musicians. I just hope we continue to get the chance to do so in the future. Our next gig see's us playing at the next match for the women's Roller Derby team in KC on Saturday, April 23'rd. We're VERY excited about this as we'll get to play to about 800 people at Winwood skating rink. Not many bands get a chance like this. We have been told that they are gonna have some mid-evil sword fighters doing their thing during one of our sets (we're playing 2 15 minutes sets over the course of the evening). I think there is also a one woman burlesque/fetish performer in the lineup as well. I'm pretty sure this gig will rank up high on my list of all time favorites when it's all said and done. We have also started work on the follow up to our 2003 CD "Station Wow" finally. Since we have free access to a full recording studio in Mike's basement we are able to write and demo as many tunes as we want. Then we'll pick the best stuff to use for the new disk. This also means we'll have some new original tunes to play live for the first time in a REALLY long time. I'm probably more excited about this then anything I have ever been a part of musically. I really think we are gonna have a great record when we get finished.
When I haven't been playing shows I've been going to them. Lot's of them actually. And the rest of April isn't gonna let up for one second. Thankfully I'm taking a couple of days off from work in two weeks to get some much needed r and r (not to mention plenty of drinky drink taking place). So that means I can take everything in and enjoy it much more (assuming I still have the money to do all of it). Before the end of the month I'll have a chance to see Burning Brides, Broken Teeth, The Supersuckers, The Rev. Horton Heat, Murphy's Law, The Spiders, The Von Erich's, Throw Rag, The Shotgun Idol's, The Federation of Horsepower and The Architects. That's a shit ton of rock kids. I'm also gonna go to a big show in KC at Davey's Uptown on Friday, April 22'nd featuring The Ramalama's, The Smashtones, Boogan Mod and The Buddy Lush Phenomenon. Three of the four bands playing this night contain former members of my all time favorite local band Cretin 66. The reason this show is happening is because Cretin's old drummer Sardu is gonna be back in town from Arizona for a visit. There is a remote chance that we may even see a short Cretin 66 reunion set so this is a can't miss event for me.
So that's pretty much been my life lately. Some things just never change I guess. Not much to report, but still plenty to talk about. Definitely plenty of quiet times and loud noise to go around for sure.
