Though the weather may be a bit sad-making (I've obviously been reading too much Evelyn Waugh), there are many things that deserve happy rant this evening:
- Zodiac: Normally I'm not one for crime thrillers, but this one was riveting, as promised by the many good reviews. Jake Gyllenhaal was solid as usual, and Robert Downy Jnr seemed to have perhaps taken a bit of inspiration from one of Johnny Depp's recent roles for his portrayal...Also, Mark Ruffalo certainly looked nice and 70s with that hair - and we were loving those tight checked pants.
- Camera Obscura: I forget sometimes why I love Glasgow, though I've never been. They remind me. And while we're talking Glaswegians, the news that Franz Ferdinand will soon be treating us to some new material makes me very giddy.
- Pauhaus Festival: Though I must admit I'm a little confused about what took them 6 months, I'm just happy it's back and while I'm not sure if it's bigger than ever, if last night is any indication, it will certainly be better. A long overdue reunion with Dave McCormack (it's been a lonely 6 months without him!) was magic, even if I did miss Dappled Cities for him - it was worth it for the closer 'Millionaire Adventurer Balloonist'. The Panics were better than I expected, though we have decided to rename them 'The Alan Cumming Lookalikes'. Ok so only two of them bear a slight resemblence to Alan Cumming, but isn't that a great name for a band? Ed Kuepper was in fine form with cellist in tow, and his fans certainly got defensive when people started jumping ship half way through. Admittedly, it was unfortunate that he lost half his audience, but if there was one band at Pauhaus that no-one could resist, it was the Grates. Is there anyone, anywhere, that can resist their charming live shows? I think not, especially when Patience breaks out the ribbon. Although, after a slightly miscalculated decision resulting in a near-disastrous stage dive, some might say Patience was a little too enthusiastic last night. Still, no one was harmed, and she was responsible for getting our blood pumping enough so that we didn't freeze to death on the 20 minute walk home.
- Crumpets & Soup. Best winter foodstuffs ever. As proud as I was that my birthday brought the eagerly anticipated Big Rain Band, it also brought a ridiculous drop in temperature that none of us anticipated, and so we had to spend the rest of the week gorging on crumpets and soup in an attempt to maintain body temperature. We're brisbanites, damn it! This doesn't happen here. Also helpful - Cirque's Vege Chowdown Breakfast. Whoever it was that proclaimed it the best breakfast in brisbane was probably not far off.
- Other things that help with surviving an unreasonably cold Brisbane winter: socks (invaluable), big doonas, the Office (US), a Twisties jumper and no 8am starts at uni.
