Title: Love Should Conquer All
Pairing: Jay Park / Jessica
Summary: Jay and Jessica have known each other since they were 5 years old.  They're completely in love.  One can't live without the other and even though they could have a better life, the couple can't be happy enough.  But when Jay enlists in the army he gets an unwanted surprise when S. Korea enters into a war.  Jay must leave Jessica and enter the dangers of war.  (JAY CENTRIC)

The days were long and strenuous for Jay.  Each day was a new danger.  Each day was a new experience.  He saw comrades and friends disappear on missions and never come back.  He saw his closest friends die in battle.  It was painful and traumatic.  It was hard to sleep at night; his ears were sensitive now.

He could hear the slightest cricket chirp or the slow rumble of an engine as a new supply truck would came into their camp.  The war could make you like that.  Jay was sure he would’ve gone insane if it wasn’t for the beautiful girl he promised to go home to.

It only took a few months for Jay to feel like he was losing himself.  He had to have a cold exterior if he was going to kill somebody.  He couldn’t hesitate whenever he had an enemy soldier in his sight.  It was just a few weeks ago that Jay shot an enemy soldier in cold blood.  Jay shivered as he went to the watering hole to splash his face.   This wasn’t who he was.

“Hey.” Jay turned around to see one of his fellow soldiers, Junsu, walking towards him.  It was the middle of the night and everyone was supposed to be sleeping.  But no one here ever got any sleep.  It was hard to sleep when you had to be alert 24/7.  They were constantly in danger of attack.   On the rare nights that Jay could sleep he was always reliving horrible memories in nightmares or going through attack tactics.

Junsu sat down beside him and they stayed in comfortable silence for a while.

“I feel like I’m losing myself,” Jay said silently.

Junsu turned to him and put a comforting hand on his shoulder, “It happens even to the best of us.  You just have to remember who you are in here.” Junsu put a hand to his heart, “The war can change a lot of things but never let it change what makes up this part of you.”

Jay looked uncertain and turned to look at the sky.

“You have a girl waiting for you back at home.  You can’t be thinking like this,” Junsu grinned as he nudged him.

Jay thought about Jessica constantly.  The one highlight of his days in the army was whenever he received a letter from Jessica.  Even though the contents of the letter was almost always the same, it was the one comfort from home.  His fellow soldiers were jealous that Jay had someone so special.

“I don’t know why you left,” Taecyeon said one day as they were running around the camp for practice.

“I felt like I would be a coward if I stayed at home.  South Korea needed me.”

“If I were you I would’ve run away with her.  Maybe move to somewhere in America.  Massachusetts maybe?” Taecyeon grinned at him with his big teeth.

“Nah..somewhere desolate like Seattle,” Jay laughed as he sprinted ahead.

It had been a year and Jay was getting tired.  His good friends, Wooyoung and Chansung, were dead and one of Junsu’s arms was gone.  The army was taking its toll on him.  There were times where he wanted to run away, despite the punishments that would follow if he were caught.  And sometimes he hated himself for thinking it, but he wanted to commit suicide.

Whenever he was on the battlefield, it was a nightmare.  Explosions and gunfire were permanently heard in his mind wherever he went.  He was tense all of the time and he was always shivering.

“We need something to distract us,” Junho said one day.  He avoided the two empty bunks beside him.

“I can teach you guys Thai,” Nichkhun offered.

“And that would be helpful.  Telling our enemies to surrender in Thai would really come in handy,” Taecyeon said sarcastically.  They had been together for a year.  They had gone through hardships and successes together.  They were a family.  But they also got tired of each other easily.  Today was one of those days.

Suddenly Jay got up, “I can teach you guys how to breakdance.”

“Do you miss her?” Junsu sat down beside Jay at the watering hole.

“More than anything,” Jay said as he turned to his friend, “But I’m afraid to go back.”

“Why?” Junsu asked with wide eyes.

“I’ve changed.  I’m not the same person I was,” Jay was worried that Jessica would abandon him once he got back home.  He was afraid of being abandoned.

“Jay you’re the most humble guy here.  You haven’t changed much from the guy I saw that first day at training,” Junsu grabbed Jay’s arm, “Hey, you really need to stop worrying so much.”

Jay gave his friend a grateful smile.  They both sat back to look at the stars.

“We only have a few months to go.”

“This is your final mission of the tour,” their commander, J.Y Park said, “It’s supposed to be a normal supply raid.  Once we finish here, you guys can either go home or re-enlist.”

Junsu squeezed Jay’s shoulder and whispered in his ear, “You can go home to your girl.”

Jay gave a smile, a genuine smile.  Yes, as soon as he finished this, he would get to go home and live happily ever after with his girl.  He kissed the picture he had of Jessica and ran into the building with the rest of his unit.

“Hold up!” Taecyeon shouted from up ahead.

Suddenly there were gunshots heard from all around them.

Jay took cover behind a crate.  He had been on raids before, attacked many times before but never had he undergone a surprise ambush.

“Jay, you’ve got a clear shot,” Junho said from beside him.  He was hiding behind another crate five feet away from Jay.  Jay got up from behind the crate and shot at the enemy soldiers, who fell down quickly.

“Counter-attack!” J.Y Park yelled.

He knew that was a command and even though he wanted to run away, he had to listen.  All of the remaining soldiers in his unit came out from their hiding places and all started attacking the enemy with full force.  In the end his unit stood proud with a few enemy prisoners tied by thick ropes.

As they were leaving, Junsu ran up to him and put his only arm around Jay’s shoulder.

“You get to go back Jay!”

That was the last thing Jay heard before an explosion punctured his ears, sending a ringing sound that vibrated through his whole body.  He covered his ears; it was excruciating on his ears, but it was even more so for his body.  He was thrown ten feet in the air and fell on hard concrete.

He could feel pain course through his whole body before it started to numb.  His eyes were cracked open and he saw Junsu lying beside him with his eyes wide open, unmoving.  He himself felt his eyes start to close as he let the numbness overtake him.  His last thoughts were of Jessica.  They were always of Jessica.  Each time he fought it was with full force, pretending that Jessica’s life was in danger.

He remembered the first time he saw Jessica drawing her grass when they were five.  He remembered how her white dress made her look like a princess that day.  He remembered when he started having feelings for her in eighth grade but tried to hide them because the girl was constantly going out with other guys.  He remembered finally having the guts to confess to her through their school talent show.  He remembered the clear day he proposed to her on her college campus in front of most of her friends.

He remembered clearly the crinkle of her eyes when she smiled, the softness of her hair, the feeling of his lips on hers.  Jay didn’t want to lose her.  He didn’t want to leave.  If only he could get a glimpse of Jessica before he left.  But Jay accepted that he would have to leave with only thoughts of his love in his mind.  He closed his eyes, “You can take me now.”

Jessica could barely see as tears consumed her.  She rushed through the white doors into the cold room.  She could see Jay lying lifelessly on the bed.  His eyes were closed and he had scars on his face but he was still the handsome man she’d fallen in love with.

She went over to him and put a hand to his face.

“Jay.”

Jay could hear his angel calling his name and when he cracked open an eye; he knew he had to be in heaven.  His beautiful angel looked exactly like Jessica.  Jay had been afraid to die, but he knew now that he would be happy as long as he got to look at Jessica’s face all day.  But something was off; she was crying.

“Why are you crying?” Jay reached out and brushed her tears away.  Her cheeks were surprisingly soft.  It felt exactly like Jessica’s skin.

“I thought I lost you!” Jessica said as she put her head on Jay’s chest just underneath his chin.

“I’m not going anywhere,” Jay said confusedly.  How could he leave heaven?

“You scared us man.”  Jay looked around and saw Nichkhun smiling down at him.  Okay this was weird.

“The bomb left you in acoma for three weeks,” Taecyeon patted Jay’s foot.

“So I’m not dead?” Jay exclaimed as he touched Jessica’s soft blond hair.

“No you’re not dead,” Junho laughed, “You’re back home.”

“You’re back with me,” Jessica lifted her head and kissed him.  Jay relaxed into the kiss.  He’d been missing those kisses for years.  He’d been worried that he’d changed.  But he’d worried over nothing.  His home was with Jessica and her heart will always be his.
