I saw star wars tonight, but I'm not going to review it, because I think that probably every third livejournal post for the next week or so will be a review of star wars. Well, maybe I will review it a little. It starts good, then gets great towards the end. Go see it if you like star wars. Don't see it if you don't like star wars. Remember that ( Read more... )

i agree. gets a bit draggy after the beginning, for about 25 minutes or so....the whole 'no, I'M in love with YOU' thing was a tad tedious.

but yeah. saw it for the second time tonight. the ending still gets me. a single tear.

man, the movie really worked best when natalie portman wasn't talking. Still, it's up there with the first three in my opinion, which isn't light praise from me, if for nothing more than the relentless downward trajectory of the last hour or so, building to that climax...I read somewhere someone suggested that it's time to start talking in terms of a quattrilogy, that is, grouping this one and the first three together, with episodes one and two being unfortuanate afterthoughts.

haha, yeah, i pretty much wrote that in my 'review' last night....one and two were just jokes but this one....i dunno, i've been saying it all day, and after seeing it twice, i've gotta say...i think it beats Return of the Jedi, in my opinion. it's almost blasphemy to say that one of the new is better than one of the original....but honestly, this one had more intensity than YET ANOTHER DEATH STAR could ever dream of.

although one small moment just absolutely killed me...Darth Vader, screaming 'NO!!!!!!!!!!!'....all i could think of was Anchorman, when Baxter gets punted off of the bridge. could have done without that.

But pointless discussions are the most fun! :) I may be wrong, but when you talk about "lifestyle," it sounds like you are talking about consumer culture. If so, I agree that it is totally wierd the ways people build (or project) identities through consumption. "If I buy x, then I will be seen as _____." Did people always do this and marketers picked up on it, or has advertising culture just beaten this into our brains? It seems that this idea is getting more aggressive, but maybe I'm just noticing it more...

It gets even more superficial when you consider: for whose benefit do people do this? Probably strangers, since friends/relatives have already formed ideas of our identities. So, what benefit do people expect by spending money on stuff that will convince strangers that they belong to a certain group? i don't really know.

It's most depressing to me to think how people use all their "stuff" to separate themselves from (or feel better than) other people. but everyone does it to an extent...
