Chipping away at childhood

Today is the last day we will be able to cook in the grammer school my son attends. Why? Because the government feel it is unsafe. I have yet to hear what they will do with Home Ec classes in highschool. It is also the last week that parents can bring in homemade goodies for birthdays or any type of celebration or function. Yep, Michael made stone soup this year, 1st grade. We also made fresh fruit smoothies for nutrition week along with healthy snack all week long. Today, we just made a human child-sized gingerbread cookie person. They traced out one of the kids in the class onto butcher paper, and then used it for a pattern on the cookie dough. They baked it in the cafeteria oven. Tomorrow, they will put the cookie person together and decorate it with frosting and candies. They learned about measuring and chemical reactions.

I wasn't surprised either considering how PC everything has become, and government influence over education now. I was surprised though to see that the PTA did not get to vote on it, and nothing has been handed out to the parents. I only know because I work there a few days a week, and I and another parent from an upper grade class were talking to some of the teachers when it was mentioned. Then I clarified it with Michael's teacher, and John sent an email to the Principal, who has been very helpful. It came from the government to the district to the schools. So come January 1st we'll see what happens as parents begin to find out they can't bring baked goods for b-days. More than likely, based on past happenings at our school, the law will get over turned somehow or modified due to parent outrage. That's the nice thing about his school. The parents are a pretty tight unit, and are very active in the school and PTA. Once word gets out, I'm sure it'll get pretty loud in that area of town. lol
