happy gotcha day, tinky!

Ten years ago, I was in my last year of college and completing an internship at a domestic violence shelter in Lansing, Michigan. The shelter manager there asked me to help her find homes for the litter of kittens living on her porch; she wanted to bring them inside, but her son's dogs were not cat-friendly. She was particularly worried about a tortoiseshell kitten that was super sweet and cried for attention whenever anyone was nearby, and Michigan winters are very cold.

I wasn't sure how my other cat, Ella, would respond. Ella is a rather fractious special cat, but it was just her and me living in an apartment, and she'd previously lived with adult male cat friends. So I brought home the tortie kitten and figured my parents would take her if it didn't work out. I picked up the kitten from MLK Avenue in Lansing and drove to the pet store during a blizzard to get some kitten chow.

The little tortie became Ella's best friend and has continued to be a sweetheart for ten years. I named her Tinky, short for Tinoket, which means baby girl in Hebrew. Tinky has no tortietude and loves everybody. She loves to cuddle and investigate and be an ambassador to all visitors. Here's to many more years of loving companionship with Tinky!
