Title: Vegetables

Kel stood in the lunch-queue in the Mess. Neal was in front of her, which was convenient, as she demonstrated by poking him in the side. ‘Vegetables, Nealan,’ she said, just to annoy him, and he made a face before piling another spoon of the green stuff onto his tray.
‘Better,’ Kel said, and then took some for herself.
In the corner, Owen could be seen clearing space for the their whole group at a table, and he waved to her when he saw her looking, but then she heard one of the boys clearing his throat behind her.
When she turned, Merric was looking irritated. ‘You know,’ he said, his voice full of false pleasantness, ‘if you want to be able to use that seat, then you’re going to have to move.’
Kel jumped at the forcefulness of the final word, and jumped backwards, landing on Neal’s foot. He, in turn, cursed, and glared at her.
But it seemed that that was all that was needed, because a few moments later, Kel and Neal stumbled towards the places that had been saved for them, leaving the vegetables unguarded for Merric’s attack.
