Coram sighed, correcting Thom’s stance for what seemed the tenth time in the last few minutes. It was plain to anyone with eyes that the boy was not born to hunt; he could hardly hold a bow still, and only a handful of his arrows did not fall short of the target.

The guardsman grew aware of another presence behind them. He turned to see the other twin, staring at them with steady purple eyes. The girl had watched them for days now, as they went through the basics of using a bow. Coram walked up to her and bent down to be on eye level.

“Lady Alanna, shouldn’t ye be inside, sewin’?” he asked.

The young girl’s face twisted into a scowl. “I’m hopeless at sewing. I hate it,” her gaze turned to Thom and the bows. “I want to learn to shoot.”

“But ye’re a lady!” Coram cried in alarm.

“So?” Alanna retorted with all the grace of a five-year-old. “I like it a lot more than Thom does.”

Coram had to admit that was true. From what he could see, Alanna was far more enthusiastic about learning to fight. In any case, to teach one twin was to teach another, and their father certainly didn’t care enough about either of them. With a sigh, Coram led Alanna onto the courtyard and stringed a bow for her.

He wasn’t surprised that Alanna’s stance was a lot better than Thom’s. When the first shot she fired on her third day hit the middle of the bull’s eye, though, Coram knew he was looking at a champion.
