Fanfiction was such a revelation when I finally discovered that it existed. I'd always spent a lot of time in worlds created by authors - if I enjoyed the book I'd be imagining how I would deal with the situations, if I'd like the characters as much if I met them. Not only was I not alone in that I had a new name "Mary Sue" and a technical term as well (self-insert).
I can't remember if we ever had to write any fanfiction at school, but I doubt that I would have relished the task as I didn't enjoy most of the books we had to read.
That twist on an old theme is the most interesting and important part of a story.
