So, is anyone else getting absolutely nothing done because of the Olympics...?

(Dear Vincent -- I'm totally working on my galleys. Really. [hides under keyboard])

;D

I've been in love with the Olympics ever since I was a kid. I remember seeing Mark Spitz get stacks of gold medals, I remember both Olga and Nadia, and I remember Dorothy Hamill and the haircut that swept the nation. During the 1980 Olympics, I watched the games on TV every night while sitting on the living room floor (being sixteen, I could get down onto and up off from the floor without having my knees shriek at me like they do now) and I did 30 sit-ups during every commercial break. That worked out to about 300 per night, which tells you something about how many more commercial breaks they have nowadays.

Even now, my eyes stream while I watch the opening ceremonies, or even just hear the Olympic theme. I don't care how commercial it's become, or how cynical some people are about the games. For me, it's about a huge chunk of the world coming together to compete in a way that doesn't involve killing one another, to represent their countries and do their best, most of them living out a life-long dream. It's about Jim Thorpe, and Jesse Owens, and Midori Ito, and the Jamaican bobsled team that first year. And it's about Kerri Strug, a real heroine whose strength and courage was buried under criticisms of her coach.

So long as the Olympics exist, there'll be something going right with the world.

Are you into the Olympics? What do you remember?

Angie
