canon camera equipment stolen, what to do next?

Dec 22, 2010 12:11

So my 20D and lenses were all stolen last week (no insurance) and by the amazing efforts of being a great nanny my boss has blessed me with $500 to get me started on the path to camera ownership. $250 is a giftcard to henrys and the rest cash.

Here's my dilemma...

the only lens that wasn't taken is a 70-200 2.8 non IS. I got it at a decent price, and I use it for concerts and basketball (I take pictures of my brother at home games). It's not exactly useful for much else (occasionally for weddings, but I rarely even assist at weddings). I could sell it and get a couple of primes back ( 50 1.4 and 30 1.4 if I found a good deal), or keep saving. I really don't want to get rid of the lens, but at the same time I only use it every other weekend during the basketball season. Sell or keep?

Also, the body. I was using a 20d and wanted to upgrade anyways. I don't really need video capabilities, but if it comes with it it's not to say that I won't try it. I don't think going full frame is what I'm looking for at the time. the 60d has a plastic body, and I'm not too gentle with my equipment unfortunately. I haven't heard much about the 7d, and I've heard nothing about the boxing day sales in toronto for camera equipment. Not that I can really afford much, but if the 7d came down enough in price...

anything you've can say is helpful, i checked out dpreview for a comparison on the 40d, 50d, 60d and 7d but not sure about what exactly I need. Anything is an upgrade from the 20d (well, I'd never go to the xt/xti series anyways)

thanks.
