Love and Friends and Food and Death (wow, sounds like a Euro art film!)

Dec 12, 2007 13:21

This was a fabulous weekend leading up to the holidays. friday night was a triple birthday for Mason and Rich and a dear friend of Doug's. (I'm so sorry but I suddenly blanked on her name. I swear my memory is getting worse every second. like Harvey Fierstein said in Torch Song Trilogy, "I'm aging as well as a Beach Party movie!")

there was a huge crowd at the party and such a fabulous time was had. I was laughing SO much about Ugly Betty, Robot Chicken, Paula Deen (love her!), Gilda Radner, and Joan Rivers.

(I swear, Bob does Joan's "What Becomes a Semi-Legend Most" album better than Joan Rivers herself!! I can hear him do the bridesmaid dress rant a zillion times and it still makes me laugh out loud. I'm laughing again now just thinking about it!)

then saturday night was another friend-and-food-and-love filled night at Matt and John's Hanukkah party. the food was divine!! but I grazed too much on the appetizers and had too much dinner. I say "too much" cuz it left no room for desert. and you KNOW I'm way too full if I can't fit in any of Matt's cheesecake. (it's delish!)

I did have a really nice moment of quiet reflection later in the evening. Matt showed me a wonderful book that I think was called "Last Suppers". it's a large coffee table book about the ideal last suppers that a whole range of famous chefs would like to have. they say what they'd like their last meal to be, who they'd like to share it with, what music they'd like to have playing, etc. it's a wonderful book.

as I was perusing it on the sofa, all around me was the sound of my friends chatting, about everything under the sun. (and to those of you who'd left earlier that night, I imagined your voices in the mix as well.) and, without me even consciously thinking about it, it started to dawn on me that that was the sound I'd want to have around me at my last meal. the sound of loved ones all around. not talking to me or at me in particular, just the collage of sound they'd make as they chat about yurts and cooking and books and vacations and lord knows what else.

there's something beautiful to me about the sound of the chatting and laughter of a group of good friends. it's a sound I could drink in for hours.

and, to tie this in with something else that was mentioned that night - now that I'm on the subject of my demise *wink* - thanks to Matt I've seen my dream casket.

The Lady of Guadalupe casket from Costco!!

(I hate to be a bad Catholic, but I giggle uncontrollably every time I think of it.)
