A few installments back, Tiren lamented that he and his party had missed
Flower Day.
From our
reference archive:
Winter solstice is on the 19th of month 8 (yushimev). For about 10 days around this date, there is no sun visible at any time of the day in the north. The light from the sun beyond the horizon can still be seen, so there is some daytime brightness (called civil twilight), but the sun itself does not make it over the horizon.
The first day that the sun returns and actively shines on a village, they celebrate 'Flower Day.'
They spend time on that day sharing bright paper flowers and simple gifts, feasting together, telling stories and dancing. The actual date of this celebration depends on the village (and its proximity to the mountains) and the weather. It is announced with excited drumming when the first rays of light hit an appointed spot.
