Christmas Day was lovely. I laughed too much and ate too much so my tummy hurts. The parents and I did presents at the hotel first thing - nothing huge, I gave Mum an MP3 player and Dad got a fancy filter for his camera from me and my brother, and Mum and Dad gave me a thing called a speed coach which means I can see how fast I'm going when I'm out sculling. Then we got picked up for brunch at my brother's girlfriend's house, so we ate brunch. Then we talked for a bit. Then we played games, and snacks were produced, which filled the time between brunch and Christmas dinner. At dinner we all had suitable hats to wear - the nearest thing brother's girlfriend's mum had found for me as a rower was a pirate hat, which I approved of heartily. We all liked the singing elf hat she'd bought for her husband. She'd made a dinner which included elements of British Christmas dinner (turkey, stuffing, carrots) as well as American food (corn muffins, green bean casserole thing, and amazing potatoes dauphinoise with pancetta in). I shouldn't have had a second portion of mains but I did. And regretted it. Pudding was the most gigantic chocolate cake I have ever seen in my life - seven layers!!! - and cheesecake, from the Cheesecake Factory. Then we all collapsed groaning. Then we played charades, to much hilarity (I had to act out "Born to be Wild", which was impossible), had air hockey and darts tournaments, and finished up with Pictionary.
And on returning to our hotel I went eagerly to my email to find my Yuletide gift, which is a beautiful Magids series fic,
A flame in two cupped hands, which is Maree and Rupert and is just beautiful. A lovely end to a great day.
Happy Christmas.
