Things that I have noticed while helping out at the Midddle schools.

I guess that the saddest thing that I realized in the art classes is that the children that would benefit the most by art instruction get the LEAST attention. The kids that get the most attention? The kids that are doing poorly or have the least interest in the material. I had noticed how I never meet kids that have much interest in art. Part of ( Read more... )

Wow. My Middle School art teacher taught us two point perspective. I feel kind of special now.

Yeah but I'm sure that you were well behaved, the teacher that I was working for was trying to teach one point...and doing a bad job. Mostly because like I was saying you really have to know how to apply the rules, knowing the rules isn't enough. Hell I feel that I've only started to get a handle on it within the last two years: )

I didn't get taught about Perspective until I took Art class in public HS. Which I failed I think. Teacher called all of my work crap, which didn't make sense to me because yes, I am not a super talented artist, but I don't think my art is crap. Anyway, I stopped paying attention to anything he had to say, so it's still is a concept I don't have a full grasp on.

That is sad I'd never tell a kid their stuff sucked. Kids or noobs can't suck. The reason I say that is because they don't know what they are doing. Experienced artists or artists who think they are experienced on the other hand...

Agreed. Granted, there's different opinions on what qualifies as good art, but telling a kid their work is terrible is not constructive criticism.

This teacher also never had any of his own examples up in the room, or did demonstrations. So I have no idea if he ever really understood art outside of seeing pictures of/reading how to do it from a book.

All of the other teachers I had were very nurturing toward their students artistic developments and gave examples/helped. Sometimes there's just a dud in the pack.

Mna I didn't even tell Sarah this, but the other art teacher at Kulshan had a perspective drawing of a castle that was actually messed up. I felt bad for the teacher. How the fuck are you going to be teaching these kids when you make mistakes yourself? I mean I'm sure that they mean well, but I don't know...I would have made sure that my shit was tight before I put that up in class as an example. I think that drawing is a lot harder than people give it credit for. I mean I wouldn't even make fun of the teacher, because at least he is trying to do something positive. But there is part of me that takes art really seriously, like Butch in Pulp Fiction fetl about boxing...that is how I feel about art.

I would've loved having you as a teacher. I can remember in elementary or maybe middle school...we were finally rotating and were slated to be in Art only one nine week period. My teacher called a conference with my mom, which kind of surprised mom because I was always pretty well behaved, got good grades and whatnot. So, she pulls out some of my art work and thrust it at my mom. Mom is like, "So? What are you trying to tell me?" The teacher insisted, "Look at it. Look at your daughter's art." To mom, it looked no different than anything I produced at home. She was still puzzled. Then the teacher pulled out identical projects from my classmates and laid it beside mine. It wasn't until then that my mom got it. There was a big disparity, I guess, between what I'd produced and what all the other children had made. The teacher said she'd never done this before but she was going to ask for a special exception for me to be able to remain in her class for a second nine weeks, rather than rotate out like all the other kids would ( ... )

Well I'm still going into the medical field but I would like to do some sort of class type thing. Honestly I would be harsh and toss the disruptive kids out of the class.

Another thing is that everyone wants to be an art teacher. So its hard to get a full time position.
