The Haunting of Rebecca Verlaine (AKA: Garden of Love)

(2003, Olaf Ittenbach)

When the sole survivor of a love commune massacre awakens from her coma two years later, she suffers from flashbacks of the events. When the flashbacks begin to cross over into her real world (without any real rhyme or reason), it’s obvious that Rebecca is being haunted by the spirits of those murdered around her.

But wait! In a strange twist not common to horror/slasher films, it becomes apparent that though her dead family and friends are haunting her in the most horrifying and grisly way imaginable, they don’t want to hurt her. They want help! I’ll admit, I didn’t see that one coming. But at that point, I was kind of tuned out of this movie.

This movie takes camp to the next level, completely abandoning any attempt at pacing or acting integrity, and instead goes straight for serious gore. The opening sequence is particularly grizzly, an obvious attention getter, as we see the slaughter of the commune more or less from a first person perspective. It’s pretty effective and the atmosphere it creates is effective. The horrible pacing and lacking middle section (and acting) make this movie a chore to get through.

So, her dead family and friends want her to find the people who were responsible for her murder and bring them back to the scene of the crime so they can extract their vengeance. Handy.

It came as a package deal with several other movies. I can’t think I’d buy this on my own, even though I’ve bought some stinkers in my day.

At 1 hour, 26 minutes, this brings my haunting total to: 2w:1d:12h:6m.
