I'm re-reading The Girl With a Pearl Earring to write my college essay.
I'm also reading The Virgin Suicides. I like how the daughters, though they are living, breathing humans, even gritty and told to be gritty in the book, are still so ephemeral. They're considered demigods, and yet I know girls like them. Terrible parents like them.
And it's much like Lolita, but in reverse. Things are presented as more terrible than they really are. Life is an epic tragedy. It's amazing.
