In the week before I got back to Boston, the temperatures here were, well, unseasonable. Like upper 50's, sometimes low 60's. When I arrived it was 55 or some such nonsense and the streets were slick with a tropical kind of rain. I visited a few people before I went home, so I still had all my luggage with me when it was time to walk home at about 1.30 a.m. When I opened the door out of their basement apartment, I thought someone was emptying a 10-gallon drum of water from the landing above. Not so. The rain was intense and incessant, and the wind was blowing it in all directions. It was still moderately warm (50 or so), but I didn't have the benefit of an umbrella or GoreTex, so off I went, trudging through raging gutters and lake-puddles, soaked through like a a drowned rat on my way home. I hung everything up and went to bed at about 3.00, happy to be dry again.
When I woke up, the rain had turned to snow, and the wind was at least 40 mph, blowing it in all directions. I had to chip a package off a chair on our front porch -- it was frozen to the seat. When I went to the grocery store yesterday morning, it was 12°F. Recall that it has been in the upper 50's for the past week and a half. That's about a 40-degree temperature swing in about 12 hours. A few of us went to see a play in Harvard Square last night, and when we got back at 10.30, the clock tower in Packard's Corner read +5°F. They felt the need to note that although we were in single digits, we were still in positive single digits. Five degrees. That's 28 below freezing. I don't care who you are or where you're from, that's cold. No, not cold -- fucking cold.
Also recall how much rain Sonoma County had received up to the point of my arrival in December. Look at the final rainfall count for the remainder of my trip. What does this all mean? you may be asking. It means I carry brutal weather in a Samsonite.
This is perhaps a silly question, but I'll throw it out there anyhow: did anyone watch the Colts/Steelers game yesterday? Even if you don't like sports that one was gut-wrenching. Or how about the Ohio State/Michigan State 2OT game in Columbus? Or the Panthers/Bears game? Oh what a day to be a sports fan.
