This is all the heaven we've got, right here where we are

our shangri-la
it's the end of a perfect day
for surfer boys and girls
the sun's dropping down in the bay
and falling off the world
there's a diamond inthe sky
our evening star
in our shangri-la

get that fire burning bright
right here and right now
it's here and then it's gone
there's no secret, anyhow
we may never love again
to the music of guitars
in our shangri-la

tonight your beauty burns
into my memory
the wheel of heaven turns
above us endlessly
this is all the heaven we've got
right here where we are
in our shangri-la

this is all the heaven we've got
right here where we are
in our shangri-la

That's the title track to Knopfler's new album and the name of the tour. Last night I saw show #95 of 101 on his world tour, and it was one of the greatest nights of my life. That may sound silly, but things I've anticipated as greatly as I did this rarely live up to my impossibly high expectations. This concert blew them out of the water. Our seats were phenomenal, the band played for two hours and 15 minutes straight, and I was standing right in front of the stage at the end of the show and all through the half-hour encore. MK handed out two picks at the end of the show, and I was three feet too far to the right to receive one. Bugger. I will say, though, that I got his attention by jumping like a kangaroo through most of the encore and got a few points and winks, which was possum. Photos at the bottom of the post from a night that found me screaming so loud I popped my jaw out of alignment (ouch).

The day leading to last night was one I never thought I'd have. I did things that put me light years outside of my standard comfort zone, and the only reason any of it happened was because I was in the company of people I trust implicitly. It still took a little coercion, but I reminded myself thoughout the day that the people who were asking me to do these things weren't doing it to humiliate me, they were doing it out of caring and compassion. Thanks for my day, guys; you're the best, bar-none. This is our shangri-la.

I probably ruined three nicely progressing diets yesterday when I suggested we pay Mandy's Taqueria a visit.

Here's Jess requesting help from a higher power to get through her carnitas burrito and mango agua fresca.

Mandy's an old pro and shows that taco just who's in charge.

Nani covets what is hers.

Christine battles agua fresca.

The dames drove me across the Bay to Berzerkely so that I could see my hero play music for a few hours...

Here's the Greek:

Though this picture may not show it particuarly well, our seats were fantastic.

MK playing "Brothers In Arms" on his Gibson Les Paul during the encore.

MK and bassist Glenn Worf knocking out "Money For Nothing," which had the entire place grooving.

Guitarist Richard Bennett (who is incredible) is definitely feelin the rhythm of MFN.

As the stars came out on stage, MK played "Our Shangri-La," which closed the set. Drummer Danny Cummings of Sheffield, England lays down a slow, steady beat from behind. Last night's rendition was apparently one of the best of the tour, according to the two members of the band who keep weblogs. In fact, they said the entire show was one of the tour's finest.

The lads (Matt Rollings - keyboards, accordion; MK; Glenn Worf; Danny Cummings; Guy Fletcher - keyboards, organ; and Richard Bennett) celebrate an electrifying show. Truly an amazing experience for this shameless groupie.

'Night, all.
