Summary: TWxChronicles of Narnia, Susan meets Captain Harkness at various points in her life.
Why you should read it: This is a lovely character study of Susan and her continuing relationship with the dashing and mysterious Captain Jack Harkness. Jack shows up not long after the first journey to Narnia, and again after subsequent journeys and at various times in Susan's life. Susan grows up and, as a young woman with the world arranged as she wants it, eventually takes a position with Torchwood.
Susan was the most tragic of the characters in The Chronicles of Narnia with her denial of Narnia and estrangement from her family. This story fills in the gaps and explains Susan's motivations. From her parents expectations of her as the pretty, but useless daughter, she becomes the practical one. Never satisfied with her life after reigning as a queen, she manages to live past the fantasy of her childhood to the harsh reality of working for Torchwood as an adult. Not without cost however. Who Susan is and what she sacrifices for those she can never tell is the meat and meaning of this story. There's a quote that has stuck with me for years. Susan may not lay down her life, but she does sacrifice that which gives it meaning.
"The true measure of a hero is when a man lays down his life with the knowledge that those he saves will never know."
