Summary: If you are reading this then I am dead, and with my death dies a promise I made a long, long time ago... When Ben Haldane is left a cryptic note in his grandfather's will, it leads him to a story far stranger than he could ever have imagined.

Why you should read it: I absolutely love long fic with a solid plot and some kick ass action. Add in some backstory for Jack, make it during one of his incarnations as a soldier, and I'm there! This fic had all of that, and more. The story starts far from Jack, or so it seems, with Ben Haldane, a young man who's just lost his grandfather and received his inheritance, which includes a letter, some old pictures, and a story from his grandfather's years as a soldier during World War II. Not just any story either, but one that takes place in a secret Nazi fortress where strange and dangerous experiments are being conducted.

From the first word of the story, the original characters come alive, taking us back in time to the perilous days of the Second World War. Jack shows up as the cocky hero, but is quickly pegged by some as more than he seems. From there, it's a solid, plot-driven, character-rich, action-packed ride to the end, complete with vile Nazi plans to be thwarted and dangerous aliens to be destroyed. I have to admit that I watched more than one war era movie when I was a kid, and I could easily picture the solid stone of the fortress walls, and hear the echoing sound of the boots marching through it's halls.

This was a darn good read from beginning to end, and the end is perfect, by the way. This Jack is the soldier, hero, and leader that we always imagined him to be. Not perfect, but confident and competent in a way that rarely came through in the show itself. If you have any qualms about reading a fic with so many original characters, a fic out of time from our usual Torchwood, don't. Each character is real and so well written, it hurts a little when we lose some of them along the way. Because victories like this don't come without a price. Bravery, heroism, and sacrifice win the day when lesser actions would have lost it.
