Why you should read it:

This is a joint rec by cruentum and misswinterhill. We each like very different stories when we read fanfiction, but on this one we are both certain -- it's brilliant and you should go and read it now.

Miss Winterhill's reasons for reading: I love a good romance. I really do. And whilst this story is not a romance in the conventional sense of the word, it is romantic and beautiful in so many ways. amand_r has taken the challenge of writing a poly story and made it into a relationship that works in many directions and permutations. It's not all sunshine and roses, but it feels true for that, for the depth of the love and the reality of the relationship/s within. I cried, more than once, but overall I found this story very comforting, very affirming of life, love, and that no matter what, we keep on.

This is, for a long time, Lisa, Jack and Ianto's story. Lisa is beautifully realised; we barely knew her in canon, but in this story she is determined, broken and wonderful. Her struggle as a survivor of Canary Wharf is brilliantly underlined by the force of her personality; this is a woman who organises sex for her husband, this is a woman who wants to climb to the roof despite being confined to a wheelchair, this is a woman who lives with disability and disappointment and all the hell that life can bring, but still loves. This, for me, how I'd like to see the Lisa of canon; fully realised in all of her complexities, three dimensional and real. Lisa was the high point of this fic for me in a stunning array of fully realised characterisation -- there was not a character I didn't like, or a character that didn't have depths of laughter and sadness.

This is a story with images that remain long after the telling. When I think of it, I think of the hot tub; of my tears for Myfanwy; of first, tentative steps towards love; of rings; of bathrooms and bedrooms and wallpaper. I have read it twice now, and each time I fell more in love with the characters and the situation and the weight of the story as a whole. Sometimes, you read something and realise that it will be one of the classic stories for a fandom. I believe that amand_r has achieved this, and I am happier and wiser for the reading.

Cruentum's reasons for reading: This story does what a lot of good, long, meaty books do: they pick you up for the ride somewhere along the way and draw you and then, when you are released back into the world in the final few pages it feels like you've spent a lifetime walking with someone, seeing them grow and evolve and change, seeing them love and lose and love again.

For me, a line early in the story stands out. Lisa says, "Ianto, you have to love him," looking at Ianto, with Jack, the him in the sentence, right there, watching both of them. Not a demand for something impossible, not despair and keeping something together, but much more than that a please allow both of us to have this.

This one is a story about a relationship, a story about people with their joys and their fears (there's a scene in the kitchen, and Jack overhearing it accidentally or not so), about the things that happen after the I love yous when everyone knows where they are, but they are still on different pages in the book and the practical aspects of love, of deep friendships with others, fondnesses and loves of a certain kind, of Torchwood and alien hunting need to be navigated.

We Held Gold Dust In Our Hands is a story about moving forward together and at the same time it's about allowing others to come close and allowing others to walk away, if need be, to trust them to come back, to trust in years spent together to be good and maybe enough, for those years. This one is a love story, plain and simple, and it's Jack and Ianto and Lisa, and reading it I fell in love with those characters as amand_r wrote them and laughed with them and cried with them.

A story about life, love and Torchwood. Read it.
