Why you should read it:This fic is set after the events in CoE. Some would call it a "fix-it" fic, but I wouldn't. You see, that would imply two things that I don't want to imply.
1. That CoE requires a fix. True, for many of us it was unsatisfying, but for many others, it was intensely satisfying. I don't want to insult an entire group of people accidentally. (I'd rather do it on purpose!)
2. That this fic came about solely to "fix" someone else's story. And this fic does so much more than that!
Let's start with the "what if". What if the Time Agency was in the habit of collecting large groups of people just after they died and bringing them back to life? Then, what if they used these groups to form primitive colonies on various planets; stockpiling the human genome for times when humanity nearly dies out? What if Ianto wakes up in the future as one of these groups?
That's where the action starts. Ianto runs into Jack, but this isn't "his" Jack. It's a younger version. Not quite so nice; not quite so compassionate. And that's saying a lot, really. Luckily, Ianto has some leverage he can use to get Jack's help. Living with Jack, surviving in the future, Ianto finally learns more about his version of Jack. The experience changes them both. It's a wonderful insight into both characters, and really, excellent back story for the Jack we all know. In the end, it all works out to fit neatly into canon events, which means a bittersweet moment for young!Jack. As for Ianto, well, trust the Doctor to know a planet that's just right for him to live on in the future.
Clever action, excellent characterizations, wonderful plot, imaginative world building, and long enough to be a solid read: I truly loved this fic. NOTE: The author has labeled it as "deathfic". There is a death for one of the characters, but it doesn't last, thus this fic does not fit my definition of deathfic. I won't give anything away, but I can tell you that I enjoyed this fic from beginning to end unreservedly and let you make your own decision.
