Why you should read it: Beautifully written, haunting and elegiac, this story uses phenomenally detailed description to paint a series of resonant, heartbreaking images. The aliens, the cosmological details, are all perfect symbols for Jack's experience of loss, guilt and the ties that bind. The metaphors are seductive, and then too, there are lines in the story that are at once so beautifully poetic and unvarnished-ly simple, that they just hit you like a punch to the solar plexus. While the version of Jack & Ianto alluded to here is more romantic than the one I personally subscribe to, the writing (as well as the beautiful elucidation of Jack's relationship with the character of Captain Jack Harkness) persuaded me not to care!
